The goal is to defend the northern-center end of the map for 11 turns.
The map is a port, meaning a lot of (mostly)impassable water tiles.
There are, at any given moment, 30-ish enemy units of varying power, a handful of which are pegasus knights(meaning they can go through the water). There's also Oboro/Hinata to worry about.
Some of the units(including peg. knights) will just outright avoid you and go for their objective.
Near the end, Takumi(provided you haven't killed him somehow) uses a dragon vein to drain all water, opening the map up for everyone.
That's mostly it, I may be forgetting some points.

But holy shit, is this the most stressful thing in the entire franchise. People who complain that Pokemon isn't like a true RPG, should try to go 70 floors in the Pyramid (Open Level, none of this Lv.50 baby shit).
I got the Gold Medal there this past Valentine's Day. Let's go over what can happen in here:

So you have to go to this ship on the otherside of the map. along the way is your standard enemies, including Chryislids. When you get to the Ship, it starts spawn 3 Chryisids each turn with no limit.
You have to get back to the starting point before you get bombed, and along the way, Chryislids will spawn from dead sharks you passed by.

Nobody praises Gen V for being hard you retard, they praise specific hard elements that exist within the games. Ghetsis had a well-designed villain team, for example; within the context of the main pokemon games (which have always been easy), this was a nice change of pace. The PWT struck the right balance between the Battle Frontier's goofy bullshit matchups with the relative fairness of the Battle Tower.
I have no idea what point you're trying to make, since ingame battling is completely separate from competitive battling.

AI for both games are significantly more intelligent than Awakening's AI. With awakening you can pretty much just bait enemies and fight them at your leisure, but in Fates there's a lot of enemies who just stay until you get close enough to attack, many refuse to attack a unit they can't hit/damage, and the map design is crazy enough that there's some challenge in both games. Assuming you're not autistic and don't just grind all the way up, even birthright's got some hard points in it.

I wouldn't call it a hard level, but I did replay that game recently, and that level was basically the only time I had any trouble.
It's not hard, they just suddenly keep throwing new big threats at you.
It's pretty typical to restart a couple times because three flying guys just shit on someone small and weak before you could protect them.
The map changes several times, and the enemies come out wherever they fucking feel like.
Knowing where to position your people to not get surprise buttfucked is key to getting through the level without losing anyone, and that's just not information you have without losing at least once.
It's also fairly early into the game, so new players get shit on a bunch of times due to lack of experience.
