They are not that much worse than in Cowboy Bebop. The animation quality was actually really surprisingly good, even in the TV show, and some of the battles were fucking amazing.
I'm really not into mecha normally, but Escaflowne made me think mecha+melee and mecha+fantasy actually works for me really well.
Plus, the god-fucking-awful neko "comical relief" thing, the characters were pretty decent.
