What made nothing in this game "scary" for me was knowing I'm a vampire

I love this level design as much as anyone, but it's not spooky to me, it's just fun.

The game throws nearly every Western taboo at you in the game and while it its all fucked up, you feel like you can take it on.

>HUBs

ESL here, always thought it was just hub. Does HUB stand for something?
>>
>>331334615
A lot of the time it limits your choices to the most aggressive ones, but there are also unique dialogue options for very low humanity. For example, with high humanity, when you meet the 9th circle conspirators, you are limited to just dismiss them. With low humanity, you can actually ask to join them or admire them for their viciousness. Just one example of many. Definitely worth a playthrough. Low-humanity nosferatu is one of my favourites,
>>

>>331335160
You should definitely do that, it's very fitting. A nosferatu pissed at the world for being so ugly, taking it out on everyone in his way, becoming as degenerate as possible. His external appearance reflecting his personality. Good stuff.

So the Nos are Camarilla supporters? They could not simply be informations brokers for everyone?
>>
>>331338413
>So the Nos are Camarilla supporters?

Not ideologically, they support it because it's a beneficial mutualistic relationship. Nosferatu place clan loyalty above all else. Sect loyalty comes second every time.

That said, the camarilla provides protection to Nos in return for secrets, and also keeps the Masquerade up, something that Nosferatu, due to their appearance, appreciate. They are information brokers for everone, but the Camarilla gives them the most benefits.
>>
>>331338413
The majority of Nosferatu are aligned with the Camarilla, there are the Nosferatu antitribu in the Sabbat and there's no reason why a Nosferatu couldn't be part of the anarchs.
>>
>>331338718
>>331338913

Alright, thanks. Actually, I was pretty dumb, because Bertram states it himself:

"I'm loyal to my Clan, my primogen, and thus to the Camarilla."

Seems pretty clear.
>>
>>331339595
You're not the only one. A lot of players have trouble understanding how clans and sects work. This is especially true of people who are only familiar with the setting through Bloodlines. Los Angeles is atypical of most cities since Camarilla, Sabbat and Anarchs are all present. It would not be too difficult for a vampire to join a different faction if they were so inclined. For the vast majority of Kindred, they have about as much control over their sect as they do their clan.

Nosferatu are a little different, as they have more intercity communication than most Kindred and aren't as outright hostile to their antitribu as members of other clans would be.

I guess the part with the valves and water rise mechanisms could be removed, but the very length of the sewers is what gives it its reputation. When you come out of the sewers, you feel like a really badass vampire, you feel like you've finally grown balls and can take on anything. Without its length to make it ever more excruciating, the sewers wouldn't give you that post-sewer feel.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I played VTMB last year for the first time and after hearing so much about the mansion is just seemed underwhelming.

I guess theres a few spots that are creepy but the whole experience felt tacky and repetitive. Everytime i entered that hallway and something got flung at me it was almost funny how predictable and childish the levels horror set pieces were.

And I'm not one to act like im not scared of something just to seem like a hard dick, i get freaked out by a lot of horror games and think its fun.

Personally i felt like I was the one missing out by being underwhelmed by ocean mansion

Different horror themes apply to different people. Did you play the level in complete silence during the night to enhance the atmosphere? If you did and still were underwhelmed, it might be because ghosts and poltergeists don't particularly freak you out, or appeal to your fears.

I think you need up to Dominate lvl 4 for all dominate dialogue options, although I will have to double check. There are lots of humans in this game, mass suicide is extremely powerful. Fortitude isn't nearly as good.
>>
>>331351427
Yeah, at this point, the gimmicks used in the Ocean Hotel have been seen numerous times in spoopy segments. You get to it pretty quickly. I think that's the only reason people mention it. I doubt most people here actually complete the games they start to play.

>>331353409
The vision field of NPCs is very small, as long as you don't run into the faces of a GROUP of people (you can scare individuals no problem), you don't run any risk of violating the masquerade. You don't actually have to use the sewers, although I have done that just for role playing.

I don't know if the its the plus patch, but I found fortitude+presence to be very useful, if its not a automatic rifle it will actually make you immortal with many guns making no damage at all.
>>
From what I remember, in the actual tabletop stats I've seen, Caine just ruins everyones fucking day when he's around.

What exactly can the guy do?
>>
>>331353794
>>331353890

Presence, after Celerity, is the most powerful combat discipline in the game. If you max Presence, enemies get either mesmerized (paralysed) or get their stats reduced to oblivion, to the point of missing every hit on you. If you max Defense (Dodge + Wits) with max Presence you can run the final levels without taking any damage at all.
>>

I fucking hate all the OHH threads.
Because the second that you've finished it and know about the spooky parts it's just a chore, removing all replayability and just turning it into a chore. Which is more shit than usual since you remember how scary it was, and see all the threads about it. All knowing that you will NEVER feel that way again.

I have to ask this without sounding like it was from /r9k/. I was offered to play VTM the books (I don't know the terminology but I just say DnD) BUT I could only be a certain clan of Vampire because in real life I'm mixed African. I'm 50% African/50% European highest being Irish.

I was told I couldn't be anything but Brujah or something else I don't exactly remember the naming of it but I thought it was weird and a bit odd. I didn't have enough knowledge of VTM to say otherwise if at all there were anymore clans I could actually join.

I just figured you're part of any clan if a sire decided to recruit you but I just declined and went about my buisness

Your race doesn't have anything to do with what clan you're sired into. It's just if you're part of an african clan, IE: Nagloper or whatever, you're probably going to be black.

Otherwise that's horseshit. You should be able to be whatever clan you want regardless.

Are you citing nostalgia as a reason for liking it? If so, there's a lot of posters here that played the game recently and still worship the level design of OH. If you mean that it loses its value after a second playthrough, well, it obviously does because you know what's going to happen.
>>
>>331363225
Yeah pretty much. It's only good the first time. On subsequent plays it feels like a carnival spook house with little jumpscares and 'spooky' piped in whispers.

"All That Could Be" also known as "Troika Theme song"
>>
>>331363434
True, the level has been designed to be played only once or twice, after that it loses all its value. There's even an in-game command to skip the quest altogether for subsequent playthroughs. That doesn't mean that it's not great the first time, at least for me and a lot of people.

I think nostalgia has something to do with it. I think most of its effectiveness comes from the fact that you're not really expecting horror elements in a game where you're the thing people are afraid of. It's a horror section in a game that is primarily not part of the horror genre.

Same thing with ravenholm of HL2, although i'd argue that game did it much better.

I don't think either of these levels even come close to the kind of effects you get from silent hill, penumbra or amnesia.

I think the mansion was really lame, cheesy shit. Pictures shaking, objects moving off tables or being thrown, "Get Out" being written on a wall. Its almost parody and it is perplexing to me why its held so highly here.

The only strong part is falling through the stairs, everything else IMO is heavily overrated.

>>
>>331366642

Yes it is. The fact that they used all the cliche scares and managed to make it so atmospheric and scary is precisely why it's praised. They did poltergeists right.

As I said before, nostalgia is out of the question because a lot of the posters played this recently and still praise the level.

>It's a horror section in a game that is primarily not part of the horror genre.

This is true, the game itself isn't so much about grittiness and being serious, but more about dark humour. And it is done very well. But this is also the reason the horror sections can't compare to horror games like amnesia and silent hill, barring some parts of the Ocean House.

Ravenholm is on par with OH in terms of scary parts desu, at least in my experience I was more scared in OH overall, except maybe for the section in ravenholm with the fast crab zombies.

Tried to get a good look at him by sequence breaking with noclip but he seems to disappear after a few seconds no matter what. Ocean house was seriously scary the first time but subsequent runs I just tend to bumrush the end and just ignore anything and everything. Overall a pretty well designed spoopy level in an otherwise not very scary game.

Still not as good as The Cradle, I'm still fucking scared to replay that even though it's an empty level with no enemies. Well, half of it at least.
>>
>>331370763
>the voice whispers "he's watching" and then "he wants to kill you."
The voice is the murderer's wife
She just wants to save you from the man who killed her and her children
That ghost is probably the only character in the entire game who is just trying to help you for selfless reasons
>>
The scariest moment in ocean house for me wasn't even a jump scare, it's when you walk in one of those rooms in the basement and there's a radio blaring music. For some reason it gave me mad anxiety. The part where you jump through the floor and wind up in a small bar room with one lit candle on one of the tables also fucked me up for some reason. I guess it's a paranoia thing.
>>
>>331371394

>That ghost is probably the only character in the entire game who is just trying to help you for selfless reasons

She's as trapped there as he is. You being there means there's a chance she can get out via you taking away what leashes her to the place, the locket. Now what happens when they get exorcised out, that's another matter.
>>
>>331371659
>there's a radio blaring music

Ocean House doesn't really rely on strictly jump scares so much as it does on sensory overload. So often there'll just be jarring sounds overlapping while you get smacked in the face with the interior decor and it makes you anxious because you just want to get away from it.
