Reminder that "PS4k" is literally just a PS4 Slim with HDMI 2.0 support to upscale to 4k (huge difference from native), and slightly different specs for marginally better performance and power consumption.

Call it PS4 Pro or Premium kind of like how Apple has iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. Plus has better screen and camera.
PS4 Premium can play all the games but just at better resolution and graphics.

Kinda stupid? I would say so. Ultimately it's probably just gonna end up being a waste of money. Nintendo, Microsoft and now Sony think that they can try and duplicate the smartphone industry with this "upgraded console" nonsense but it's not gonna work, or atleast it would take a long time for it to work.
The main factor here is that we are pretty much all conditioned to accept the fact that apple is going to release a better iphone in a year and we are going to buy it. We shouldn't be that way but that is just how we are because that is how the smartphone industry has always been.
With consoles on the other hand, the expectation amongst the majority is still that when you buy a PS4 or Xbone or 3DS then you as the consumer are going to be perfectly fine regarding anything those systems offer for atleast the next 7 years and no extra money whatsoever is going to be needed besides for maybe online.
Im sure ps4.5 is going to be a ps4 capable of using vr while the old ps4 could only play vaporware vr

I already thought the PS4 had HDMI 2.0 support, because it supports 4k BDs. And the PS4 doesn't currently upscale (it matches the output resolution to the native resolution of whatever you're playing/watching etc) which I've always thought was a lot better, especially when you're playing something like a DVD on a 1080p TV because it doesn't try to stretch it to 1080p like playing it on a PC would. It'd be interesting to see if it did just support 4k upscale for games how they'd look and if it'd look worse playing an upscaled game on a 4k TV than just a game at 1080p on a 4k tv.

Sony doesn't want to alienate the 30+ million current PS4 owners and neither do developers so I don't see a significant hardware improvement having an impact on most games. Developers will still target the base model as its the one most people will own.
