The PS3 didn't, it used software upscaling. Many games even utilized different resolutions depending on the output, that's why GT6 ran like shit at 1080p monitors unless you specifically set the maximum resolution to 720p

Yeah, GT6 ran like shit with 1080p enabled because the game natively rendered at 1440x1080 with MLAA in 1080p mode. If you disabled 1080p it only rendered at 1280x720 with MLAA.
PS3 was kinda shitty compared to the 360 in this regard, especially early in the generation when many games would not support 1080i, and older HDTVs often only had 1080i/480p support.
