Zero need to grind in them. Some harder encounters might be available soon, but you can just challenge them later with stronger gear and acquired levels from just playing normally.

I was very neutral with Lyner and Aoto. They were so typical JRPG protags. Croix though, he was really great.

Even with Lyner being inconsistent I still preferred him as a protag over Croix who felt like a beta, indecisive harem MC for most of the game, I even preferred Aoto more. People always say how great he is but he was about as interesting as a wet paper bag to me.
I was pretty excited to play 2 because people hyped it up so much but I ended up liking 1 more overall, 2 is just more fun to play cause of the battle system.

Croix does commit to a girl unlike Lyner does, and he has at least his wit sarcasm going for him.
As for Lyner, his uselesness with the relationships is grating, and it's beyond irritating his lack of tact was what caused several problems like Aurica running off in Phase 2, the infamous scene with Misha, all the problems in the Flash Cosmospheres and a good part of the problems in the AT1 light novel, all of that in top of mostly being the classical idiot protagonist.

I only played II, never finished it, but I enjoyed the world setting and under lying mythos. Maybe it was just the english translation, but a lot of the thinly vieled euphemisms kinda grated on me and I eventually stopped playing. Mirr is def best girl tho. Fuck the spoiled bitch, the musical prostitute, and that clingly little girl who couldn't take a hint.

Official translation was awful garbage. Thats why there is fantranslation that has already fixed biggest problems with it. I recommend finishing it, over even better, play first game before doing it.
Didn't play AT3 but between 1 and 2 I....am honestly not sure.
AT2 is considerably longer. Much, MUCH longer than I had hoped it would, but it was good the entire time and I never felt like "Why won't this game end already?".
I liked the setting in AT1 better though.
