The new PS4 model with better hardware is genious. By sticking to PS4 architecture, they can just take PS4 games, up the native framerate to above 1080p, unlock framerate to 60 fps and suddenly the games will look and play completely different. Without having to do much work for it. It's basically the optimal solution in keeping PS4 as the go-to gaming platform instead of losing consumers to PC, NX and smartphones. Sony's making sure the PS4 is at the center of it all.

I think Sony's aware that the consumers are used to incremental upgrades by now. Smartphones and PC already proved that most players won't wait 7 years before upgrading. And PS4 players will still be able to play all games since it's most likely that games will be made for PS4 and then upgraded to PS4K, sort of like porting from PS4 to PC, but much, much easier.

Some games aren't built to go above 30 because of how their engines are coded. Also, given the mandates and design philosophy Sony is pushing, its unlikely you would start to more games go 60 fps instead of ramping the graphics up as high as they can go.

This is true for handheld ports. But pretty much all games made for modern consoles are using engines that don't tie frame rate to physics. Assuming the games are programmed to run at 60fps.
Lots of Japanese developers still tie game logic to their rendering, which means that running the games at higher fps results in fucking with gameplay.
Not to mention that the platform still won't be able to make the most out of its new hardware unless developers develop exclusive titles for it.

PS4K is simply an upgrade to HDMI 2.0 / HDCP 2.2 so the device can play 4K Netflix, VUDU, Amazon, etc. The current PS4 cannot receive 4K certification because it only has HDMI 1.4.
To actually play games in 4K the new PS4 would require a massive hardware upgrade that is not dissimilar to an entirely new console generation given it would need 4x the fillrate. At 4x the resolution it would need 4x the pixel shaders as well. They're not putting a Fury X in the new PS4.

You would think so, but no. PC ports have shown otherwise and people diving through code has all but confirmed it. Certain games are poorly coded and suddenly unlock the framerate only breaks the entire game. That's why you're starting to see jagged release dates for games like NFS.

This is literally how early termination fees always worked. They went down the longer you had a subsidized device because the ETF was meant to cover the cost of the new worthless hardware you were given.

For the new PS4 to play games in 4K that the current PS4 can only play in 1080p, it would need 4x the ROP count, 4x the shader count, 4x the memory bandwidth, and more RAM.
So we're talking about a GPU with ~4600 shaders, 128 ROPs, and significantly more memory bandwidth. It can't be using HBM since it will need more than 8GB and Nvidia's only using 8GB of HBM on this year's Pascal Titan. Instead, Sony is going to what, increase the size of the memory interface? PS4K will have to be $600+ in that case.
Making a new PS4 that can play games natively at 4K would be a huge upgrade.

I wonder how things will play out when xbox 1.5 and ps4.5 have similar specs. It could be that they both end up having the exact same hardware since they're both with amd and will both want to sell the newer console at similar price points.
Xbox is with nvidia now but I doubt they'll use nvidia hardware till the xbox 2 since the current xbox one games won't be compatible with the nvidia hardware as it's already optimised for the amd hardware.

They don't gave to sell 2 different games. They can sell one game which will act differently based on which console it's being played on. With older games they can just release a simple patch which changes the native output resolution and framerate of the game. They did this with assassin's creed black flag on ps4 when it was 720p on the disk buy they patched it to 1080p a couple of days after the release.

It will be a 1080p60 model with an MXM expansion slot for future GPU installation.
Coupled with DX12, the existing APU in both the new Xbone and PS4 will be able to output 1080p60 and 4k via HDMI 2.0 for streaming content and very light games.
The expansion slot will allow for graphical improvements via dGPU that can Crossfire with the APU and possibly tackle 4k at 30hz.
IMO it's a good move for console manufacturers, but at some point consoles will be obsolete as cloud gaming starts to take hold. It'd be better just to buy $50 PSTV-like devices and pay a Netflix sub to game.

I doubt it. Including hbm will affect how existing games work since some games, especially exclusives will be optimized for the 5 gb of gddr5 ram. HBM currently only comes at max 4gb so this could create problems. Don't expect the new xbox or ps4 to be massively different. You have to remember they still have to cater for the current existing titles on each platform so they can't do any radical hardware changes. Everything will be pretty much the same except raw gpu horsepower. Even adding a new cpu or overclocking the current one can create problems as we saw with the X1 when they overclocked the cpu by some shitty amount (like 6%) because that's all they really could do without causing instability.
