Honestly God of Was should have ended with Kratos hurling himself into the ocean.
He worked as basically a slave for the Gods for 10 years under the promise of being forgiven for his sins and released from the nightmares that plagued him.
The bit where he is formally forgiven but it changes nothing is a very good ending for his character arc IMO, killing himself is the only thing he could do to escape the guilt.
But I'm guessing that it wasn't a message they wanted for thier game.

He was given a quest, by the gods, that if he were to kill Ares who was stirring shit up for no reason he'd be rid of his memories and sins against his family.
What do they do right after he finishes the quest? The one where he died impaled to a god damned wall and was brought back from Hades for them mind you?

WAAAH I was being an asshole and attacking everyone and got my shit pushed in, better cry for help from the gods like a baby when he meets someone stronger than him(despite being a spartan), oh look ares said if I serve him he'll give me tools to beat my enemies, guess I'll be his bottom bitch.
proceeds keep disobeying the person I sold my soul to, gets punished but ares tricking him into his own family (didn't even make him do it technically either), He then goes on a titanic tantrum and kills him.
Kratos is a giant manbaby and all of his troubles are self inflicted and he acts like he's the victim.

You missed a few things.
He was a Spartan general who sold his Soul to Aries rather than die, and he became an enforcer of Aries going around and fucking up everyone's shit because Aries told him to and kept making him more and more powerful.
Eventually he is encouraged to go into a temple of Athena and kill everyone, 2 of which turn out to be his Wife and Daughter. He wasn't forced to do this, he just blindly massacred everyone and he accidently hit people he cared about, sure they were put there by Aries, but he still killed countless other women and children in the same rampage and simply looking at who he was swinging at would have prevented it.
He swears revenge on Aries and becomes an errand boy for the other Gods, working under the promise of forgiveness and freedom from his nightmares. Eventually they give one final task: to kill the God of War since he's a dick.
Kratos complies, since he gets revenge and Athena promises divine forgiveness, he doesn't give a shit about Athens being burned. The other gods all help him because everyone hates Aries but they've been forbidden from fighting eachother directly.
After retrieving Pandora's box he defeats Aries, and Athena reveals that while he can be formally forgiven and not officially known as a child killing asshole, the gods do not have the power to stop his guilt ridden visions.
Depressed he kills himself, but is saved and made into the new God of War, which he doesn't really want to be. Athena makes him a God, but presumably Zeus did not consent.
Later he is an asshole God and hated because he favours the army of Sparta over everyone else when he's not meant to play favourites. But even this is just an excuse for Zeus to kill him, since the actual reason is paranoia about the cycle of Son usurping father recurring. Then Kratos allies with the Titans and aims to kill Zeus.
His anger against certain people may be justified, but Kratos was always an irredeemable asshole.
