Things can be cheesy and somewhat serious at the same time. Metal Gear and Legacy of Kain are good examples.
There's room for all kinds of tones in video games. The same with anything else.
RE4 did it perfectly, cheesy as fuck but you still got invested in the outcome.
It all depends on the writer really, a bad story that takes itself too seriously is FAR worse than a bad one that dosent take itself seriously.
