RTS lived for the longest time at the hungry edge of hardware capability. We always wanted more units, bigger armies, better maps, interactive/destructible terrain, etc. But at a certain point, the genre got to the point where it was too much for the player to handle. All the pieces of RTS that people loved have been split off into their own games, where the player can give that aspect their full attention.

Tower-defense games and city sims give the base-builders a full experience without worrying about early-game rushes, or even enemies.

Total War and its ilk give you more units than you can handle without the petty distractions of bases and buildings.

LOL/DOTA isolates the single-unit-control that SC and WC3 introduced, and is easily spectatable thanks to its top-down perspective.

4X and Grand Strategy titles appeal to the build-a-ton-of-shit-and-steamroll playstyle that nobody wanted to put up with in multiplayer.

RTS is effectively dead unless it can find a reason to exist.

Handful of people are still getting good at this game. Been playing sc since broodwar, have to say Lotv is far better than Hots atleast. Its a step in the right direction. I think they just need to go the moba route. Start having micro transactions, custom army and unit skins. Once blizzard actually adds some content the game will live again. But now no ones plays this game, not even autists retards from /v/ do. This game arguably has the highest skill ceiling of any esport game on the scene right now and no one cares. But blizzard has their hands in to many things to actually do anything about it.
