For fucks sake. They are doing this again.
Just make a 4th dimension discrete, so it only has few levels. Make most objects extent into 4th dimension properly, but decay visually or something, so you can recognize it. Some objects like doors may disappear in higher levels, but it will drain more of you powers for staying inside of it. Some levels or floor may exist only on some of the levels of 4th dimension. That's it. Something like gloom from the night watch books. It's already thought out and perfect for gameplay. Not just a mindless slider for another physicsless axis, that you will be bored to scroll through after 15 minutes.

Well, in the game you have basically three directions. Vertical, horizontal and forward/backward. When it switches to the other dimension, it simply replaces one of those directions with the W coordinate. So instead of moving horizontally in the X dimension and forward or backward in the Z dimension, you're moving horizontally on the W dimension but still forward and backward in the Z dimension.

Therefore since you can bypass obstacles through the W dimension but still move in Z, you can arrive in unreachable places when you switch back to normal space. The X dimension could be full of obstacles while the W is empty.

In theory yes. Portal is like a Klein bottle. It's a single-surface construct in abstract space, where you can freely move across all of its surface. But it poses a problem in 3d space. The part where it intersects with itself cannot produce a single-surface object with no cuts. That's where it must visit the 4th dimension and come back. In Portal you can seamlessly walk from one point in 3d space to another. The portal is that shortcut through the 4th dimension.

I know it's not that simple, but that's the theory of the klein bottle dimensional leap. Portals can be shortcuts through other dimensions, but it can be an oversimplification that it's just through the 4th. Afterall, when you walk into a portal, you are moving in all 3 of our dimensions, so it's safer to assume that you take a shortcut of at least 3 higher dimensions.

It is a dimension, it's just a very simple representation of one. In the game universe, Y is always up, Z is always forward and X is always right. Dimensional shifts in our universe wouldn't look like that because there is no "up", "forward" or "right".
