I own an original r4 running woodr4 firmware. Im happy with it but there are definitely better(and more expensive) options. I remember acecard being good and cyclo and supercard being the better ones.

there's actually a homebrew application that lets you use flashcards that nintendo had blocked in the past.
and with emunand you can safely update to the latest firmware and enjoy online 3DS features (don't ask me to explain, look it up and worry about it once you get a 3DS)
