I say leave it as is. The skull part kinda feels cheap if you don't know which way to go at first, but you're pretty generous with powerups, so it shouldn't matter too much.

I tried to spawn the player in a spot so they would be able to see the spikes to the left before they try to jump into them but i'm sure plenty of people won't notice

Level design tips? I guess I would say spend a ton of time playtesting levels from multiple angles. For instance in one level before I upload it I will try to beat it in one life with all the coins and a speedrun to make sure it flows well. I don't really have any good tips other than obsess over your level and try to think how players will react to every situation. I used to mod for the source engine so I sorta have some level design experience
