ITT: Polybius

>let us discuss conspiracies and general knowledge of this enigmatic game
>>
Didn't miyamoto and the army get involved or some shit?
>>
Polybius was most likely just a one off game made by an arcade owner, he probably modded an existing cabinet. From the supposed claims of what the game plays like, he probably hacked Tempest.

I'm more curious as to why it was called Polybius if there's any other reason than simply being a reference to polygons
>>
Ice cream? god I love ice cream!
>>
>>330671108
I keep hearing this...That the military may have been testing some type of new mental shit or something and someone would visit the machine ever so often to extract data(?) idk, just shit I've heard.
Too vague
>>
>>330671108
I mean, why isn't there an original polybius out there? Just some replicas, no originals.

Miyamoto has an original polybius locked up in his relics vault somewhere

Why won't Miyamoto let anyone play it?

Because Miyamoto has been brainwashed by his own game.

The real truth behind it is that it WAS a gov't project about mind control but, not in the way you'd expect. More so about how to control information.

There's a website dedicated to the truth about this game.

Except it isn't a creepypasta and there's some merit to it.
Creepypasta just ruined shit for real theories and such. I hate that shit too man
>>
>>330676242
>Except it isn't a creepypasta and there's some merit to it.
If there is merit, how come there's no actual documentation on the cases of kids getting amnesia or records of the game's release at the time? All I can find is rumours or speculation.
>>
>>330676982
Wish I could say I've seen but no
Idk, controlled info? Lol seriously, no idea, but that is the stigma associated with Polybius

No one really asks, & they definitely aren't telling.
>>
>>330676242
>there's some merit to it.
The only merit to it is reports of people getting sick playing Tempest and the FBI monitoring arcades in the 80's because of suspected gambling. Those two things got combined into the urban legend.

>>330678353
I could buy that

I suppose it's nice to have a single site containing most notable creepypasta so you don't have to go searching around for it, but I wish people wouldn't post their pastas just to creepypasta wiki and nowhere else.

I think they should post it elsewhere first because part of the appeal of stories like this is the notion that they're true, which is completely absent on sites like that, as opposed to stories posted on places like /x/.

I mean, everybody knows that they're bullshit, but I still think it adds something when they're presented as though they were true.

Back in the day of arcades videogames were not much different in how they were dealt with on a market level.

You couldn't just release the game, you had to test to see if people would actually play it.

To save money, companies would discretely make a deals with arcade owners to set up an arcade game and then observe how many players were lining up to play it for a short period of time.

Obviously not all these companies were subtle, and likely sent men in their business suites to sort of spy on their game and record it's progress.

When they got the results from the testing trails they would then swiftly remove the game from the arcade, which is generally given a fake name, to plan the release of the official game.

This is most likely what Polybius was, a test arcade box set up in a few arcades that was watched over by company employees who weren't subtle at all.

Because of shit about the men in black, government agencies and the myth that the government was looking for skilled potential pilots based on arcade skills, as well as how swiftly the game disappeared from the arcade and the denial of arcade owners from disclosing information about it, all combined to form the Polybius legend.

So, polybius may have just been that: a beta version of a game with games/dev companies just gathering basic info(?)

Highly plausible.
But I dunno man, the stigma with polybius is what makes it so interestingly engaging.
>nothing definitive ever
>>
>>330686297

Some people believe it was the beta machine for Tempest, though I don't remember if the years match up.
