In Japanese her name is spelled (phonetically) as eh-ah-ri-su which is clearly a Nippongo "Aeris"

Aerith and Aeris are both pronounced as E A RI SU to the Japanese because S sounds and TH sounds in English both use SU in Japanese to pronounce, same as Sephiroth being pronounced SE FI RO SU

The -th could be explained the same way Sephiroth is, in katakana he is Se-fi-ro-su, the same way she is E-a-ri-su.
