A flat stage with no platforms allow for cheesy tactics such as Limit camping, spamming and running away, all of which encourage slow, brawl like play.

As if part of the essential balance of melee wasn't the stage selection. FD is a horribly imbalanced stage that should be reserved as a counterpick.
Sakurai took the "FINAL DESTINATION ONLY" meme too seriously. Most competive(lol) Smash matches are played on Battlefield variants.
