Never ever played a FE game before in my life. I'm going on a long ass trip in a few days and looking to pick up a FE game to play while driving up there. Is Fates good for a beginner? If so which version?

I'm in a similar boat op, except without the long ass trip part. I personally went with Birthright on hard mode, it's pretty good so far but you might get a little tired of "route the enemy" being you mission objective.
But I'm only on chapter 10 so the objectives might be more varied later on. Can't speak for conquest yet though.

I've played pretty much every FE on release since 7 first came out in the west. Conquest is the best game in the series bar none and I hated Awakening.
