At no point was it actually explained to him that humanity would perish if he killed the Shadowlord. If anyone is to blame it's the Shadowlord in the first place for taking the risk of kidnapping Yonah's replicant so he can bring his own daughter back, endangering everyone else when Nier inevitably comes for her.
