Here's my take:
The Xbox 360 is basically popular because it's fully compatible with Windows with no setting up. Games often even have Xbox controller icons and prompts. The controller itself while decent, has an irredeemable D-Pad.
The Xbone controller is a much improved 360 controller. If they've finally released Wireless drivers for it, that's the one you want. It uses Wifi Direct rather than Bluetooth.
The Dualshock 3 doesn't need to be considered because the Dualshock 4 is a direct improvement over it and is easier to find/cheaper (For some reason the DS3 is hard to find and expensive).
The Dualshock 4 is probably my favourite controller of the bunch but will probably require some setting up. From what I've heard there are drivers that can make it work like a 360 controller so it shouldn't be too much of a hassle. Plus you get the Touchpad we can be mapped for mouse usage.

DS4 was always plug and play and DS3 is both plug and play for half a decade now.
I've used 360, Wii U Pro, and DS4. All are good. I would have preferred the Wii U one if the software had the ability to remap the buttons. Some games don't let you and the A/B X/Y buttons are swapped. With that said... DS4 > Wii U/360

I've used a 360 controller, a DS3 and a Steam Controller on PC.
The Steam Controller is hands-down the fastest and most accurate with a properly configured profile.
360 is good, works pretty much out of the box. I like the DS3 too, but it requires you to install custom drivers (after which it pretends to be a Xbox controller and works transparently in games).
Go for the Steam Controller if you feel like you can actually stomach some change for the sake of significant improvement, if not choose the one with the shape you like best. Hold them in your hands in a shop or something.
The fact that you need 3rd party drivers for DS3/DS4 shouldn't discourage you, it's a one-time thing and after that they work flawlessly, even via BT.
If you don't already have something go with the Xbone or DS4. Don't know why people would suggest the DS3 or 360 controller when they've already been improved on.

The reason this feature is so good is actually because it's a fully functional button.
It's not a pad, forget about the mouse shit, it's actually the best goddamn button on the whole controller.
With just the right amount of clickiness, Just the right amount of tactile feedback.
And as you said, it's mapable, so you can in theory even calculate how prisice your clicks are, how far away from the corner you clicked, etc.
But the main draw of this thing is its ability as a really good button.
