>Mechanics: FoMT, maybe. They're all quite similar and functional, perhaps excluding the Islands games
>Characters: HoLV. Packed with character events that flesh everyone out.
>World: They're fairly equal, and all serve their games well enough. Nostalgia might make me say SNES.
>Overall: HoLV. An all-ending playthrough was immensely satisfying. Probably my second favorite HM after 64.

You can't sell your vegetables beause the local farm doesn't want the competition, so you're actually a rancher/tree grower. The entire town is lifeless, gray, drab, and boring. Everyone wants to leave because it's a dead-end miserable tiny podunk and there's nothing to do or explore. There's like no festivals. The whole game has strict time limits because of the chapter system. You have to watch everyone around you grow old and die. You can be forced into marriage out of convenience. You can get divorced. You have see your kid through his bratty teenage phase and eventually come to terms with the fact that he wants to be a faggy musician or artist. You die at the end, having worked yourself away on a farm in the middle of nowhere.
It's too real, man. That's not what I play Harvest Moon for.

I think AWL is anti-comfy myself because it's boring. The gameplay with long days and minimal events and activities feel like a slog and you quickly end up with more money than you can spend. The moody atmosphere was actually quite nice and I craved more from it, but the game felt ended up feeling too empty and unpolished.

The fact that the young MC and his wife die before all but one elderly woman sucks some of the realism out of the game (which was aiming for it) too.

I've tried the classic ones by recommendation but they didn't do it for me. I ended up liking Animal Parade much more than the fan favorite 64. The art and the girls are the cutest in the classic ones, though. I love the ps1 version Back to Nature portraits, it's adorable.
I also had some fun with Magical Melody and DS.
