I just got warframe on advice from a friend, and I'm a pretty mediocre player at best. My friend and I are about to jump into some really difficult missions to power level me, but it'd be pretty good to hold my own after I close the gap a bit.

This is mostly true. The game is very pay to not grind. The only thing that cannot be truly bought (without trading) are prime weapon parts.
However, I enjoy the game casually anyway. I still find it fun, and play it about once weekly.
leveling is irrelevant in that game
look for an up-to-date warframe and weapon tier list, grab one that's not out of your reach, then farm mods. and materials. and void keys. then more warframes for versatility. then more weapons. then farm the void. then buy play when you get a 75% login discount. then buy potatoes because everything is useless without them. then just grind. and farm. forever.

Get mods. Depending on what frame you use and how you want to play them you'll need different ones. You may also need Forma's and Orokin Reactors.
For your weapons, the must-have mods are Serration, Heavy Caliber, and Split Chamber. From there you add in mods based on what your weapon can do, be it elemental damage, crit damage, etc.
Good luck getting a lot of the mods you need, though. Most of the good ones come from Orokin Derelicts, which have a piss-poor chance of dropping anything good. If you have mods or parts to sell on the market, then that may be your best bet.

Don't do this. It's a good way to ruin a game. Just play it organically, from the beginning. Yeah, your friends might not want to play with you while you're learning the ropes and leveling up, but you'll have a more enjoyable experience in the long run. Most games are about the journey, not the destination, and that's especially true in the case of Warframe.

Every mmo requires grind, old korean mmos required yout to grind for a month just to gain a level. Look up some Ragnarock Online grind stories, warframe is piss easy compared to that.

Don't know man, i played a lot of MMOs and still play, grinding to unlock a dungeon or something is ok, the situation i explained is different, i remember now, i was trying to make a Mesa, so i had to farm for the Mutalist Alad V Assassinate Key so i could drop the blueprints, so i had to wait for a invested invasion to get the coordinates, get all the rest, wait 1 hour to make the key to have a chance to drop a blueprint and farm every thing again to make another key, don't know if the drop rate of the blueprints is good or bad since i gave up after finding out about the grinding.

I hated that too and it put me off the game for a long time.
Recently I actually started to really get into it out of some miracle of giving it a second chance.
The waitgating doesn't really bother me anymore once you get into a rhythm of getting something new, then as you're leveling up those new things you're getting the materials to make another new thing that'll be ready to use by the time you max level the shit you already have.
It just takes a while to get the resources to get to that point.

The mastery system locks you out of better equipment until you reach a certain level. Power creep ensures that most of the earlier weapons are far weaker than newer weapons.
The only way to increase your mastery and get decent weapons is to grind up weapons and Warframes.
If you're a F2P player it's going to be a while before you get good enough equipment to game the market for plat. You'll have two Warframe slots and I think 8 weapon slots. Depending on how many events you do you MIGHT earn a weapon slot for placing high on it when they give you the 1st/2nd place rewards.
You're going to have to waste time crafting inferior weapons in a game where location determines difficulty, going beyond DEAC like late T3/T4 missions and high-level areas means needing broken setups to counter the unbalanced gameplay and RNG determines how long it takes you to find the mods that you need to make your weapon/Warframe viable.
This is as much grinding as any JRPG/MMO, it's just in a game that isn't one of those.
