Is playing this on a 3DS the best way to experience Mario 64?
>>
I like it better than the original. But some people are pissed off that certain stars are locked to certain characters.
IMO, SM64DS with the 3DS's circle pad is a great way to play it.
>>
>>329354416
>star off playing as Yoshi
I didn't like it
>>
No playing it on the Wii U is
>>
>>329354960
Is it any better than playing it on the wii?

Get those glorious Gamecube controllers rocking on that version.
>>
Playing it on the 3DS doesn't change the control issues. The control is still digital. It is no better than the DS. Worse probably.

Play the N64 original. Emulate if you like.

no, the 3ds remake was AIDS
>>
>not available on the eshop
>>
>>329355413
But the ones in the right look better.
>>
>>329355162
Wait you can use GC controllers for virtual console games on the Wii U?
>>
>>329356227
Of course not, you can only use them for Smash :^).

there are people on v who think the right side looks better
>>
>>329354416
Yes
>Doesn't look like ass
>More characters
>Convenient features
>Minigames

People like to say that the movement was ruined but I had no problems moving around in it.
>>
>>329356426

It does actually look better though.
>>
>>329354416
nah
even with the extras you're still limited by 8 directions for movement on ds version
its more of a version to play after you've already beaten the original
>>
>>329356426

both look like shit desu

and I like SM64
>>
>>329354416
The circle pad makes it loads better to move around. Although, I never had much of a problem with it on the DS anyway.
>>
>>329356426
the only thing that looks better in the left is the grass' colour.

Those koopa and Mario and even the ground look like pureshit in the left.
>>
They're different enough to warrent playing both.

parallel universes
>>
>>329356426
Forward slash too hard to type on your phone?
>>
does the touchscreen actually do anything / display relevant information
>>
U first have to master half a presses before unlocking 3ds eshop mode version
>>
>>329356227
No Gamecube controllers for the Wii version.

That's why I'm asking if the Wii U actually does anything better.
>>
>>329356590

Circle pad
>>
>>329360281

kek
>>
>>329361909
Still only uses 8 directional movement
>>
>>329362162
No it doesn't.

>>329354416
No. That controls like shit and looks like shit. And the added characters only detract from the original experience. Avoid it like the plague.
>>
>>329354416
After playing both, I'd have to say no. The DS version has extra stars, characters, and some sweet minigames, but when the movement feels so slow and clunky (you need to hold a button to run and can't change it) it's just not worth it.

I'll always hold the free movement of 64 to be better but I pop in the DS version from time to time for the minigames.
>>
>>329360560
It spoils the location of the stars, so it's garbage like the rest of the game.

>>329362312
The circle pad doesn't magically make the controls of the game analog, you retard.
>>
Controls arent bad, people just like to exaggerate.
>>
>>329362650
>The circle pad doesn't magically make the controls of the game analog, you retard.
Have you even fucking played it, dipshit?
>>
>>329354416
SM64 is literally defined by its amazing controls and exquisite movement system. The ds version removed both. you're a fucking simpleton if you think the DS is better just because it has more quantity of shit to do, which really ends up being filler because you have to backtrack 120 times to switch characters in the lobby.

Source: I speedrun sm64 and sm64 romhacks. go and play star road right now instead of shitposting about the DS version.
>>
BUT FIRST
>>
Just emulate the original, you'll also be able to do dem sweet half a press runs
>>
>>329355413
>3ds remake

Anyway, the remake is a prime example of how it should be. More levels, things to do, collect, more playable characters. Whoever was in charge of the Zelda remakes for the 3DS needed to take notes from SM64DS.

But they did. In case you didn't notice it, they didn't ruin the controls in the Zelda remakes.
>>
>>329361909
still 8 directions
>>
>>329363836
We're not talking about the controls. A valid complaint, but not related to the content. I get Zelda has to follow that stupid timeline, but one more dungeon or some more sidequests or even a new area to explore would be nice. How does a 2004 launch title for the DS outrank a 3DS game? Majora's Mask 3D is also applicable and is the main reason I didn't buy or play those two games.
>>
>>329364092
Any new content would have been amiibo locked anyway
>>
Minigames aside, the new content is bland and doesn't make up for the run button and eight way movement
>>
>>329364483
if emulating you can map run and attack on the same button and the game still functions great.
its almost like the old marios that way
>>
>>329364159
Unfortunately, this is also true.
A shame about Nintendo's hardware, there aren't too many Zelda 64/Wind Waker hacks outside of map editing.
>>
>>329361909
Still 8 directions and 1 speed
>>
>>329362846
Have you? DS games don't know the circle pad exists, it's just the dpad to them. There's no analog control.
>>
>>329362846
you are an absolute moron, kill yourself
>>
>>329364858
This is correct, but I would like to point out that it's still better to use the circle pad over the dpad if you're gonna play it on 3DS. This system's dpad in particular is just very poorly suited for playing 3D games
>>
>>329355413
This

Why did they censor it?

No, no it isn't. You're expecting precision which isn't there, which simply ends up throwing you off.
>>
>>329365497

Prime Hunters looked significantly better.
>>
>>329354416
Not really, because the extra characters are superfluous
>>
>>329365521
I'm not sure I follow? I expect it to be just as precise as a DPAD, and it is.
>>
>>329365620
Prime Hunters had dope multiplayer, if Federation Force was anything like that i'd be all over it.
>>
>>329365869

I'm with you 100%. The hayday of Metroid Prime Hunters multiplayer was GOAT.
>>
>>329365854
It's exactly as precise as the D-pad. The problem being the Circle Pad isn't a D-pad. You expect 360 degrees of control and you literally don't get that, you get 8 directions like a D-pad has.
>>
I didn't like it, but I just despise handhelds really. I don't think its on Wii U virtual console.

I'd say WIi U VC > Wii VC > N64 Console > Emulation > other shit
>>
>>329356426
Left
>Silky sharp

Right
>Pixilated shit
>>
>>329365854

If you run forward, and then you make a slight adjustment to your run, then it doesn't happen and you fuck up.
Being stuck with the digital inputs is really difficult to get used to.
>>
>>329365996

>>329354416
No, just getting the original game on either N64 or using a wavebird by downloading it on the Wii VC is

SM64DS is completely ruined by the controls. Even if you use an analogue thanks to the 3ds, its still locked in place in 8 directions. I tried it myself, it fucking sucks.
>>
>>329366158
Sounds like you're stupid. Play 3D Land for a bit then 64DS straight after and you'll see.
>>
>>329363836
Do you have an alternative for SM64DS? They only had a Dpad for the DS, they do the best that they could work with.
>>
>play super mario bros 2
>first mario game
>die on castle
>no lives left
>puts me back 4 levels and expects me to beat them all again

Jesus, might have done it if this was still 1998. Fuck that shit.
>>
>>329368184
Yes, they shouldn't have made the port in the first place. You don't make a Mario game with bad controls.
>>
Memes aside, can you do the parallel universes travelling procedure in SM64DS as well?
>>
>>329365972
I love MPH multipalyer, but the amount of aimbot codes online was such a chore to deal with
>>
>>329368338
You're worse than the type of person who would rather a game never be released than be released on multiple platforms.
>>
>>329354416
Mario 64 is hard to enjoy naturally nowadays.

When it was first introduced, the novelty helped get everyone past the rough edges of systems then first being developed.

The camera in particular is so fucking awful now by 21st century standards that you pretty much have to go into the experience being willing to deal with it.
