they are both fps. Ss1 was not even an rpg. For a shooter to be just a shooter with little to no depth like hl is barebones game design.
>>
>>329320319
Risk of Rain and Super Meat Boy are both sidescrollers. That doesn't mean they can be compared.
>>
>>329320319

But despite its simplicity, Half-Life is a great example of creating immersion through fluidity and consistency. You have to concede that the control interface in System Shock is clunky and primitive in comparison. Not to mention the cluttered gui. Half-Life tried to do one or two things, and succeeded. System Shock, like most Looking Glass games, wanted to be a lot of things, and succeededbut with many compromises. They didn't have a ready formula for a perfect game... hell, WASD wasn't even invented then.
>>
>>329320943
>WASD wasn't even invented then
Have you actually played System Shock? The original control scheme used WASD, just shifted down one row. Ultima Underworld also used a slight variant on WASD.
>>
>>329320736
You can compare anything, but you can't equate everything (which is what OP does).

Beyond that OP's not worth discussing seeing it's retarded bait ("simplified cod") with a hipster twist.

Literally nothing wrong with this.

daggerfall 1996 you can rebind keys and have a mouse look
>>

Are you saying that it is or that nobody said it was?
Because it really isn't an RPG, nor is it trying or claiming to be one.
>>
>>329325572
It's an action RPG. Sorry that it doesn't fit your retarded definitions of what a RPG is.
>>
>>329325721
If System Shock is an RPG, then so are Legend of Zelda and Metroid.
>>
>>329325770
How so?
Those games don't have the RPG elements that System Shock has.
>>
>>329325854
Name those RPG elements.

I can maybe understand saying SS2 was just an FPS and not an RPG, but c'mon.

Please elaborate on the ways in which System Shock is an RPG, and that don't also apply to the Legend of Zelda. Which is what the devs modeled the progression in System Shock after.

You mean ammo, grenades, health pickups and a bunch of skulls that you can't do anything with? Seems like a huge stretch to call that an RPG if most shooters have half of those.
>stats
Doesn't have those. Are you sure you've played the game?

>Doesn't have those. Are you sure you've played the game?
Dermal patches increase damage, regeneration and other shit. There's stats even of they're hidden.
>>
>>329326630
>There's stats even of they're hidden.
By those standards, every game has stats. Numbers are how games function.
I'm not saying that System Shock isn't a complex game, you know. Just that it's not an RPG. You don't customize your character into a certain role, you go through a progression of gates.
>>
>>329327009
>By those standards, every game has stats. Numbers are how games function.
You can't alter those numbers in most games. That's a RPG mechanic.

>You don't customize your character into a certain role, you go through a progression of gates.
Yeah you do, that's what dermal patches and hardware is there for.
>>
>>329326170
So Zelda is an RPG then?
>>
>>329327154
>dermal patches
Those are temporary boosters, and not mutually exclusive. They work using numbers, sure, but everything on a computer does.
>hardware
No exclusivity there, either. How are those different than the boots/tunics/gauntlets/whatever in LoZ?
>>
>>329327429
>Those are temporary boosters, and not mutually exclusive. They work using numbers, sure, but everything on a computer does.
They alter your base stats. Going 'hurr durr but everything is numbers' is an incredibly unrelated thing to say.
>No exclusivity there, either. How are those different than the boots/tunics/gauntlets/whatever in LoZ?
They need to be managed through energy and aren't just there to advance the plot.
>>
>>329327792
Still don't see how that makes character A different from character B, which is the whole point of an RPG. And Zelda also has nonessential items and items that are powered by an energy meter.

>>329328423
You also choose which boots to equip in LoZ. The point is that there's nothing that can lock you out of anything. All character can eventually do all things.
>>
>>329319986
The big difference is that System Shock is shit.
>>
>>329328746
It locks you to a build because of the energy meter, and hardware alters your damage between other things. How is that the same at all?
>>
>>329328653

>played both games

anon, assert yourself
>>
>>329329072
>It locks you to a build because of the energy meter
But you can change what you activate on the fly. That's not a character build.
