Help a brother out /v/.
My laptop is pushing on 5 years now and I need something new, or at least will soon.
It's been a while since I've used a windows laptop and have no idea about them now.
What's a good brand/model thats under about $1100 AU?
Must be:
> Laptop (portability, otherwise I'd just build a PC)
>Good at gaming and streaming.
>Long life/be viable for the future.
>>
>>329282849
Dell XPS
>>
>>329283078
>Dell XPS
They're like $1800
>>
>>329283274
From your must haves you will expect to pay 2000 or so. Macbook Pro 2013 are great but for games you could try a MSI or Gigabyte laptop. But expect around 2000 for something any good that plays games.

Not going to happen with those specs, unless you're ready to drop nearly three grand on a computer. Prepare yourself for resigning video games and streaming for an unspecified amount of time, until you can scrounge up enough cash for something that doesn't suck. Yeah, it sucks, but you can't have everything for free (which is what you're basically asking for)

Also HP is gutter trash, even Acer is miles better these days
>>
>>329283748
I'm not expected ultra settings, just can play most games.
I have a Macbook Pro 2011 and once I learned to wineskin it's been pretty ok for gaming, heats up a bit but the lag is manageable and I'm not fussed by grafix.
I just wanted to get rid of the hassle for wine skinning all the time
>>
>>329283956
Well that laptop is half the price my mac was in 2011, double the ram/HDD and an i7 and my current mac runs games not too badly.
>>
>>329284146
"Most games" is still stretching it unbelievably far, unless you enjoy running 5 FPS at a resolution for ants while the heat is cooking your wrists to a nice crispy texture. I don't think you understand how fucking unrealistic your desired specs are
>>
>>329284426
Can you elaborate more because I figured 8gb ram and i7/i5 would be enough considering thats about the recommended specs now.
>>
>>329284146
Your MBP is at least well built, will last a number of years and manages to keep the heat down, unlike the category of computers you're looking at. They're plastic toys that will run really hot and break easily, the battery will start losing capacity real soon and spares will be nigh impossible to get. It's worse in every imaginable way, except for raw benchmark scores I guess.
>double the HDD
Yeah, on a poverty tier 5400rpm platter spinner. Big whoop.

Protip: use your MBP as your portable thing and build an actual desktop to handle gaymen duties, it's pretty much the best you can get except you can't stream ASSFAGGOTS while at your parents' house I guess

Alright thanks anon I getcha now.
>>
>>329282849
yawn

base your decision solely on the capabilities of the graphics card
everything else will fall into place

http://www.notebookcheck.net/
go here and input the video card of the laptop you are considering to check it's performance
>>
Get something with a thunderbolt port that can use an external GPU, assuming you don't do much gaming on the go.

you want a pc gaming experiance, but arent willing to sacrifice. you cant have best of both worlds unless youre willing to shell out. good luck
>>
>>329287409
get rid of ssd and upgrade graphics and youre good
>>
>>329287409
Seems pretty sensible to me, maybe bump up to a 2TB HDD if you hoard media at all.
>>
>>329287529
what graphics card would you replace it with?
>>
>>329287656
I'm wondering this too, 390 is a great card. Anything more is a waste unless you absolutely must play the latest games at 4k.
>>
>>329287409
I'd go with a 2tb wd black for the hdd because of the longer warranty if your budget supports that.

Could go with a different brand of SSD too because there's barely any real-world difference between them.
>>
>>329287796
you got the right idea, if youre going with amd go with 390. if you change your mind along the road go with a nvidia 780 other than that you can upgrade to an i7
>>
>>329288205
that power supply is a bit overpriced. go with corsair
>>
>>329288423
Agreed. Any 80+ certified one will do fine.
>>
Fuck turns out the price comes to nearly double
>>
Seeing where this thread is going, ask someone who builds PC's for a living anything.

What can I change about this to make this a fair bit cheaper

Where are you from?

>>329290040
You could bump down to a lesser i5, and get a cheaper PSU. $130 is insane. You don't need 16GB of RAM unless you're editing video.
>tfw browsers seem to refuse to utilize all my RAM, reloading pages with 10GB to spare
>>
>>329289571
How much do you charge on top of all the parts and how do you get customers?
>>
>>329290486
>How much do you charge on top of all the parts
10-20% usually. More if the build requires a shit ton of man hours.
>how do you get customers?
It's a relatively tight knit community here so we're just the resident tech guys mostly.

Australia

>>329290329
it was only $40 for the extra 8gb
Google chrome uses that alone
>>
>>329290920
>Australia
Thought so. I was wondering why the prices looked like something I'd end up paying.
>>
>>329289946
http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/DPGbFT
I managed to shave 50 dollary doos off while still sneaking in an SSD because for christs sake, it's 2016.

As the other anon said you don't need that extra 8GB and when you're asking me to shave some of the price off it's going, even if 'it was only $40.'

If you're really scrimping you could probably get away with getting a 970 for $20 less and then on top of that getting a 500W power supply save around maybe $30-40 total.

>>329291057
>tfw Canada is just as bad lately
>fuck eh m8

are you fucking high. ssd is a must have.

He'll probably call it a placebo.
