I beat farcry 3 and blood dragon 3 days ago and started farcry 4 yesterday. It's way better than both of those. Blood dragon is great for the comedy but its the same gameplay. 4 has way more stuff to do, nicer world, more refined everything. Definitely getting Primalwhen it's on a humble bundle

I think they did pretty well with what few weapons they have. The animals are pretty cool too. I like how they do shit like react to fire and the pure desnity of animals makes for constant random generated encounters. The story is really shit though so keep that in mind. If you think far cry 4 would be alright without a story then primal might interest you.
The whole taking animals thing is a refreshing aspect though lots of them are just upgraded version of the same animal. Wolf --> white wolf --> rare striped wolf. Also no matter what you will probably end up using the saber tooth tiger end game which is stupid one is obviously superior to the rest. And why the fuck can I ride a brown bear but not the two stronger and bigger bears? It makes no sense.

It does feel a little half assed in times with the game mechanics. The owl is awkward and poorly implimented, I think I would rather have had a persistant hawk friend that flew around and could be used to target people at a distance. Being able to control a large animal as well as a hawk while fighting would have increased the variety a bit. More weapons would have been possible, too. Slings? Different size spears and javelins? Flint knives? Boomerangs? Pocket sand? Literally throwing a snake at someone? Different handling clubs and axes?
Think about how Chronicles of Riddick did melee combat with clubs and knives way back then, so much better.

Not him but I have my doubts. It sucks having to fight a mammoth as is, having a bunch of mammoths on sterioids who can outrun you seems like it'd suck and limit combat to your pet commands and dino riding. Plus I'd think bigger animals would mean a less dense animal population which honestly was one of the best aspect of the games. So I guess it depends on how many types of little dinosaurs they can find to cram in and reserve the big ones for boss fights

They do have a sling and there are two different types of clubs, as well as flint throwing knives.
I don't think the owl was necessarly meant to be used as a main form of combat. It is used for recon/stealth builds to cause a bit of havoc and break up the large groups of enemies so you can pick them off. There's a reason the owls attack is on an 80 second cool down, but you're right, the mechanics were clunky as fuck.

Ah, I haven't gotten that far yet. I am enjoying it though, but like Farcry 2 I have to make my own fun. I turned all the HUD elements off and basically stumble through the game using landmarks and the big map to find my way to objectives.
Reminder that they didn't bother modeling any unique animals to the time period that weren't easy reskins.

That's definitely the way to go. If you want to keep it challenging don't spec into the melee resistance on the bottom left when it becomes available. Its game breakingly good.
And don't use too strong of a beast because eventually it keeps almost all predators away just by being near you. It's more fun to actually have to use fire to scare away predators.

I hate most of the changes. I preferred the minimalist HUD over the array of floating icons that broke any sense of emmersion. Radio towers made the game feel even more arcadey. Even the increased mobility and ease of travel just made the vehicles useless and took away any sense of desperation when you broke down behind enemy lines.
