The story goes that during Halo 2 development, Bungie used to spend pretty much every night playing multiplayer in LAN, and that may have contributed to the delays. It's also why multiplayer was always so fucking tight under Bungie. They actually played it and balanced it based on their experience with it. 343 just doesn't even like video games. There's no way any of their "updates" were play tested.

343 is just like shitty fast-food place: they serve very small amount of food to maximize profit but not too small so you won't get angry. Bungie on the other hand used to make each new Halo bigger than the previous: more game-modes, expanding sandbox, adding map editor, theater, social and sharing features.

That's because the thing that made Bungie great wasn't the management, it was the low-midlevel employees that really loved multiplayer. When Bungie made their new deal with Activision, they streamlined everything and the upper management convinced themselves that they were almost solely responsible for Halo's success. After the Destiny shakeup where there were a lot of employees leaving(including writers and low-midlevel staff) a lot of the reason Bungie had been a success left.
Video games, unlike a lot of other art, really are the sum of their parts. That's why after an acquisition, even if the parent corp is hands off, most developers are never the same. It's the combination of high and low level staff that makes games great.

It's more that Bungie used to understand how important community is to the multiplayer scene. You've got to be really active and listen to the shit people are saying on the boards.
No one knows why, despite know the importance of community, they took out all the shit that makes it easier in Destiny. If I had to guess, I'd say someone higher up really like EverQuest and early 2000's FPS's and wanted to recreate the experience of finding outside resources to make guilds and clans.

Firefight was good because Bungie spent a lot of time designing every map, just think about how much resources went into AI scripting alone. They have used one trick though: put Firefight maps into the campaign so they wont have to spend a lot of time working on both things. Still it only shows how much attention Firefight got.
