Why don't devs use digital services like Steam to offer

Why don't devs use digital services like Steam to offer demos of games they have listed?

Their sales would surely go up if people had the opportunity to play the game to see if they like it or if their PC will run it properly. I know I personally stray away from buying expensive games for these two reasons since I don't wanna pay like $80 for a game I don't know if I'll like or if it could even work. I'm sure lots of people are like this.
>>
its called -- stay with me now, it's a lot of info -- "PSN," "nintendo network," and "xbox live"
>>
Because it costs time and money to build a restricted version of the game, and they suspect that the money a demo will get them is less than the money it will cost them.
>>
i think studies show for normalfags who buy one game a year most people try the demo and decide not to buy the game, Unless its something unique like Truck Sim most demos hurt in opportunity costs

>The data, gathered by analytics firm EEDAR, shows the average sales for an Xbox 360 game promoted only by a trailer to be 525,000 over six months. Add a demo to the mix, and the average drops to 250,000.

Because it's shit and they know it, the only way they'll sell any copies at all is with a hyped up marketing campaign that gets all of the dumbshit friends worked up, so the whole gang buys the piece of shit to play with them resulting in everyone regretting their purchase after a week, only to repeat the whole ordeal when the next overhyped turd hits the market.

is it really that bad? the last AAA game i played was TLoU when it first released, and i didn't spend a penny more than what i bought it for since the season pass was included

do most AAA games have these season passes?

For multiplayer games yeah, and sometimes it's even worse like dark souls 2 where the season pass didn't even include all the DLC.

rayman legends demo is quite good

Not if their game is shit.

Demos hurt sales these days.

what was the last game you bought because of the demo, /v/. mine was probably mountain blade or CoH1, can't remember which one it was now.

I'm going to buy some DCS modules because of the free plane DCS comes with, does that count?

I haven't bought any "new" games in a long while, last being Destiny.

Destiny cost me $60. Season pass was another $40. Then, since the Season Pass didn't cover the new expansion, that was another $40.

$140 for a year of game.

The real kicker?

When the latest dlc was revealed, I shit you not, they sold THE ENTIRE BUNDLE, ALL DLC PLUS BASE GAME, FOR $60.

It was actually cheaper for me, as a Day 1 player, to SELL MY ORIGINAL COPY to Gamestop, and buy a brand new copy, with everything that I ahd already bought, than it was just to buy the expansion.

So, yeah, it's really that bad.
>>
I'll tell you why, its because the motto of 'make a good product' died, and 'sucker as much money as possible out of people' took its place.

The vast majority of games made these days are garbage in some form, fucked by either the devs or the publishers draconian business practices.

This is why demos aren't a thing anymore. It gives customers the chance to see how horrible and trash the game in question is, and avoid being jew'd out of money from pre-rendered trailers and paid off 'reviewers'.

Reminds me of when the GOTY edition of CoD 4 came out and I traded my regular edition for it, the 2€ gamestop insurance or whatever it was called made me save like 10€.

What was even in the GotY of CoD4?

I don't remember any paid maps, and there most certainly wasn't anything in campaign added.

fucking hell, of course I think of the answer way too late.

really strange even psn has more demos than steam.
>>

Steam has refunds now though.
>>
>Their sales would surely go up if people had the opportunity to play the game to see if they like it or if their PC will run it properly.

Common sense would say so, but the opposite is actually true. Generally, games that have free demos available tend to see fewer sales than those that don't.
>>
>>329214285
>I don't wanna pay like $80 for a game I don't know if I'll like or if it could even work

That's why there's a refund option.

Demos decrease sales. Period.

If you want to offer a part of your service for free, you have to follow a F2P model, where part of it is free and the other is divided into microtransaction tiers, all while being able to play as a freeloader with people that do have premium items.
>>
>>329219881
the issue is that you spend a lot of time tweaking the settings on pc, when arkham knight released i got over the 2 hours just trying to make it run decently
>>
>>329220007
>spent over 2 hours to just run the game
>didn't refund
That's really just your personal fault in logic.
Anyway, the Arkham Knight is an entirely different case, and they've offered full refund for like a full year or something, and Steam provides refunds even for games with over 2 hours of gameplay and older than 2 weeks on case to case basis.
And that wasn't the point of my post. The purpose of the demo/Steam "rent" is to figure out if you like the game enough to buy it, not to see how well it runs. Although I guess the latter is true as well to a lesser degree.
>>
>>329214285
Demo isn't a good way to estimate a game.
Developers can put a lot of fun stuff in first 2-4 hours, but later the game may become much worse.
>>
>>329220857
this is why i prefer demos that are set a bit into the game.
>>
>>329220984
Such don't exist. They all show only the beginning.
>>
>>329221169
ORAS demo wasn't even a part of the game, just mechanics and teasers

There's other, older ones, but it's way too fucking late for me to remember them.
>>
>Think about buying a game
>Play demo
>Game is shit
>Don't buy it

>Game has no demo
>Game is shit
>They still have your money

It's less of a problem now that refunds are available though. Unless you actually listen to the people who say "it gets better 20 hours in"

Because if you have a hyped marketing campaign you get to make a relatively uninformed decision on weather to buy the game. This is a far safer option on the business side.

Imagine all the hard work they'd have to do
>>
>>329214285

Nobody wastes money on demos because they know you can pirate the full game for free. If you're not paying to begin with, a demo won't help.
>>
>>329223097
Try not being a retard for once.
>>
>>329214285
>want to play game
>buy it
>it's shit
>refund it

That's easier than demos.
>>
>>329216373
Don't make your game shit then.
