I had a Makuhita I caught in granite cave or whatever in Dewford that I named Diomedes, I had planned on keeping him as my main fighting type. He was leading the party when I got to the Slateport museum so I could bring him up to speed with the rest, and the first grunt I fought led with a Zubat.
I went to fake-out before switching to get some free damage. Zubat has inner focus, doesn't flinch. Wing attack, 100-0.
It was a poor start to the run.

It lets you customize competitive 'mons with greater variety. I could opt for greater speed or more attack on an offensive type, pick physical or special defense boosts for a tank, or boost a naturally weaker attack stat to make a mixed set and surprise people. A lot of natures are more or less useless, but most have a purpose.

Mixed sets. Not every Pokemon falls cleanly into a physical or special attacker, Salamence, Zoroark, Deoxys-A all run mixed sets pretty often so you'd have to split them into one category or the other.
Also involves filling different roles entirely. I could give my Tyranitar a speed boost at the expense of special attack and slap dragon dance on him to sweep - or I could give him a special defense boost with assault vest so he just eats special attacks all day and traps shit like Gengar or Alakazam.
Removing natures would limit the variety of different sets and settle Pokemon into even more rigid roles, and if that happens there's always going to be ONE Pokemon that does a job better than any other - which is not a problem Pokemon needs to make worse, since it's already kinda bad.

From Black and White onward, you have the option to have local link battles with everything set to lv. 50. Anything above 50 will be put down to 50 for the duration of the fight. So you can use a lv. 50 Mewtwo or Tyranitar just fine.

Consensus seems to be that Heart Gold/Soul Silver are the best, but I thought Gen II was stupid as shit so that's up to you. Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire is not worth the money, and X/Y has very little in the way of post-game content, but does have the 3D models and such - it requires a 3DS though, so you'd be shelling out more cash than just getting any other DS model. Black/White puts you in a region with over 150 new Pokemon, and you won't see an old one until after you beat the Elite 4 and Champion. It also has a wide selection of very good and pretty cool Pokemon, though the bad designs will often catch quite a bit of hate. Black II and White II are generally regarded as on-par or even better, with more post-game content to boot.
