You earn discipline points based on xp. I think it's like 1/3rd the exp your earn. If you want to level a vocation without leveling your character too much try killing weak shit like goblins.

To level a vocation you need so many discipline points. A fraction of the exp you get by killing things normally gets turned into it. It's kind of like job points in final fantasy. You get more points by killing things that give less exp. Training your vocations become piss easy after you finish the main quest because of reasons that are spoilers.

Perfect Blocking an Ogre's attack with a Shield or Magick Shield is effective. Fire enchanted shields are more effective: ie Mystic Knight's Flame Trance or Inferno Feint or a Fighter's shield which has been buffed by an fire elemental enchantment.
Unlike a Cyclops, it is difficult to stun an Ogre with Lightning. Furthermore, it is almost impossible to stun an enraged Ogre, and they are also less prone to staggering when enraged.
(Easily Silenced, though the Ogre has no magic of itself.)

I noticed there is a perk you get from Assassin that gives you 20% increased damage for going solo but I doubt that makes up for much.
If solo isn't good how would I go about making a support only pawn or as close to one as possible?

Preference. Technically mkb is better, since you can hotkey stuff and mouse is more precise at controlling the camera. I personally use a gamepad since I prefer analogue movement for exploring and I connected my computer to my TV so I can sit in a comfy chair.
