I got the definitive edition for cheap and its an alright game mechanically. I stopped playing it halfway through because I got sick of the story, characters and almost everything other than the combat.
Even the Classic Dante outfit doesn't help because sometimes he's wearing it in cutscenes unless it's a scene where Dante references anything from his original outfit so he's wearing it for some reason

In my case this game was how Dark souls II was to Dark souls. I kind of enjoyed it but i came back to the previous game the moment i finished it.
DmC had horrible gameplay compared to DMC 3/4, infinite air juggles easy to do and a FUCKING HUUUGE JC WINDOW that bugged out more than being stylish. Man, that game was shit but got some fun out of it.

MGR just had that sense of speed, energy and self-aware humor (most notably Armstrong) in a new context, and were enough to make up for its short length and less variety between combos.
DmC on its own isn't bad either, and had some neat new mechanics and honest ideas, but through the lenses of DMC it advertises itself as, the shitty changes it brought along (dull Dante, EZ bosses, combos/style points that pull themselves off, color-coded enemies, lame dialogue, etc) atop the director literally self-inserting himself just sealed more fears about the "new" unnecessary direction than hopes.

Because Donte doesn't respond to controls well, you can't cancel nearly as many animations. If that's what you mean you are wrong.
The control setup itself is stupid, R1 and L1 both dodge because you have to constantly hold R2 or L2. Great idea idiots.
My favorite part is that the toggle idea was hailed as an innovation when it's just what they did for Heavenly Sword, and it was lame there too.

i was never let down for one second during this game, from beginning to end it just got more and more insane and terrible and for one playthrough is enjoyable as a trainwreck alone. Between blatantly telling fans of the first 4 games to go fuck themselves or executing unborn demon fetuses with an assault rifle for no apparent reason and down right childish writing non stop made one hell of an experience
strip it of the DMC drama and its a forgettable 6/10 game with maybe one or two unique levels worth playing

Not really. While its initial release wasn't exactly negative, it got a lot of bad press for the whole backtracking thing, in addition to Nero being kind of a pointless character. The control scheme is genuinely stupid. It's funny, b/c it's a prime example of someone trying to fix what wasn't broken in the first place. It's so terrible and unintuitive. Why would there need to be a separate button for launchers when the original series had a much better solution by mapping launchers to R1+back+Attack? Where would there need to be two separate dodge buttons, aside from their retarded decision to force the player to hold the triggers for Angel/Demon weapons? Why do I need to double input forward, then the attack button if I want to do a Stinger? That shit just overcomplicates things. It's funny how DMC series has a remarkably simply control scheme for being one of the most complex action games ever.
Well I guess you could argue that it gets pretty complicated for what it demands out of you for higher level play and then there's the fact that it's highly recommended that you switch the controls around for certain characters or Styles. Even still, R1+fwd+/_\ to do a Stinger really isn't that complicated, and in fact, is probably easier to input than what they had in DmC.

It's a patch. An update. Implementing free mods made by fans and an .ini file with edited FPS cap with bundled DLC. And minus one fedora. That's all.

I got the HD collection the other week as well, finally made it to DMD on DMC3, any tips for fighting the enigmas? Been trying to work on my Quicksilver timing but 2, 3 shots always fucks me up once my DT runs out. I've definitely yet to git gud.

Honestly I never got the framerate issues. Then again I don't have the Steam version. SS mod enhances the graphics, optimizes it and it adds Style Switching like in DMC4. I greatly recommend it. Pirate it first I guess, and if you can get it to work smoothly buy it on Steam.
DMCHD collection is great though, no reason not to have it seeing how you'll be getting the first one as well.
