VIGILO CONFIDOXcom thread
I just hope they will introduce a better meta in XCOM 2, the first remake was literally only spam satellites to win.
Also before you ask, I intentionally did not watch most of the livestreams/previews.

Xcom with a vietnam war soundtrack would be cool

That was pretty hype desu

Yeah, they've shown the base and it functions, you should check it out, it doesn't spoil anything
Any of you ever tried the Xcom board game? Shit's hard. And it takes some time
>>324066262
There's a fucking board game?
Yeah. You can play alone or with friends. I don't recommend playing alone though, because then you'd have to fill 4 roles, could get overwhelming.

There was a very specific formula, was build two satellites first month, deploy them before end of month. Build uplink and 3 sats deploy before end of month second month, build nexus and 5 sats deploy before end third month, raid alien base to lower panic fourth month, nexus and 5 sats 6th month.
I guess it's kind of sat spam if your trying to not lose any countries. You can choose to lose a few instead of satellites and make the battles better and focus on a foundry or OCS since you have 8 countries to lose before game over.
>>324067548

Nah, it was decent for a while when John Walker was put in his cage. That was back in 2010 or something though. After he got more power it went to utter shit.
>>324063589
With Panic being gone as a mechanic losing missions isn't as crippling and since the primary means of preventing yourself from losing the game is raiding blacksites and alien bases when you feel like it instead of satellite spam, base management is more free. The satellite replacements in 2, Resistance Comms, are just used to get extra funding from an area now (like how LW's funding works) and to get continent bonuses.
>>324063589
Agreed. The meta of nuXcom was obnoxious in its 'YOU MUST SATELLITES!!!!" and continent bonuses.
I liked original x-com where actually playing the geoscape was a BIG part of the game.
>Aliens took out a country of not much importance and set up a base
>Instead of taking out the alien base right away, constantly harass its supply ships for boatloads of elerium and other resources.
>research early mind probe so you can identify leaders / medics / navigators
>Capture an early navigator for hyperwave decoders with 100% detection rate.
>Endlessly interrogate medics so you can get psionics early
NuXcom just doesn't allow a lot of the same level of strategic decisions.
>>324069970
I actually wasn't aware of this, especially the removal of Panic

>>324070503
Sir, what better way to kill xenos than while listening to good old Terran music, sir.
>>324070619
>>324070921

>>324071356
Oh, and I'm playing EW.
>>324071402
I want to talk about real XCOM, not watch vaporware shills jerk each other off about their casualized cash grab.
>>324070310
I don't know how much you know or how much you want spoiled, but I'll keep it in tags anyway.
The new loss condition is something called the Avatar Project, which the aliens actively build towards during the course of the campaign. They'll regularly build Blacksites and Bases that contribute to the progress of the project, and the only way to stop it is by assaulting these facilities. You start out in one region and have to gradually build up comms with other regions and leapfrog across the globe to increase funding and gain access to the areas the alien facilities are in.
Also the 'pick 1 of 3 missions' is still in but now instead of Panic you choose to counter certain Dark Events, which are basically alien research. These can range from temporary stuff that lasts for a few weeks or permanent alien upgrades. Couple examples
>some Advent troopers use poison rounds for a month
>a UFO hunts after the Avenger and if shot down will prompt a base defense
>the aliens hide in Faceless on all missions with civilians for a month, not just terror missions
>aliens have much longer LoS for a month
>next terror mission is sped up by a couple weeks
So instead of outright pushing you closer to game over (though there are 1-2 Dark Events that will increase progress on the Avatar Project), they just make some other aspect of the game more difficult.
Pic's how the new Geoscape looks.
>>324071245

>>324072751
To paraphrase >>324071782 without spoiling.
It's similar to Terror from the deep, in that if you let the aliens get too many points without smashing the things that give them points, you lose.

>>324072902
That's incorrect and you're literally a crybaby
>>324072751
They haven't really said, the lose condition is spoilery because it's in line with a project the Aliens are behind on Earth, involving Advent. Probably some hivemind related "control nexus" for all of humanity if I had to wager a guess. It probably links Earth with other planets under alien control, permanently.
So their project being completed would be the technical "lose condition", or the "doom clock".
You'll lose anyway if you can't gather enough support cells.
>>324072952
Or rather, aliens will build things that give them points periodically. If you dont smash the things that give them points, given enough time you will lose.
>>324072614

It still happens. If you psi-panic ADVENTs, they can shoot their own too.
does anyone know when GMG send out keys?
although to be honest, it won't really matter since i won't be able to play the game until the 9th at the earliest
>>324073937
Keep a roster filled with at least 4-6 squad sight, double tap Snipers and bring 2 to every mission.
That means a sniper can fire anywhere on the map provided they have line of sight trajectory, and can shoot twice in a row on the same target or another. Give every sniper adrenal glands and they will give your entire squad a buff every kill.
For mechs - Kinetic Strike > Grenade Launcher > EMP.
With EMP you can disable any mechtoid or sectopod in a wide area - it also does 5 dmg to anything inside the bubble. So it will kill outright any sectoid, thin mint, drone or seeker.
(Give your snipers Disabling Shot too, to keep enemy mechs in check).
All that being said - your number one strategy is baiting aliens to your squad that is under overwatch. Overwatch, overwatch, overwatch. Don't get impatient, and don't end a turn under sight of a new alien squad.
>>324072614

Go Europe for starting country, it provides one of the best bonuses throughout the game, try to pick up north america next.
Get lasers by mid-month two.
In your first abductions, try to get engineers as you will need them to build satellites, both cheaper and to sustain more uplinks.
A cube of uplink uplink nexus nexus should be enough to cover all countries.
Squadsight snipers are bullshit
Converting a lieutenant heavy into a mec is good in the earlygame as it ups his potential damage, while still fulfilling the same general roles (area destruction, damage soaking / suppression and in general medium accuracy fuckoff high damage).
Research credits alongside an early lab or two will skyrocket your research speed.
2 connect elerium generators IIRC provide more power than you could ever need, failing that early steam in a good location does quite a bit for you.

Europe provides equivalent or better bonuses to africa until the late game, at which point it no longer matters.
South america is only 2 countries and incredibly easy to pick up, its bonus isn't even relevant until month 2 or 3.
The 'best' countries to start with are either north america, europe or africa... and well we've already establish that europe ~>= africa.
Asia you want to snatch up anyways simply because of huge amounts of engineers they provide.

Half cost labs / workshops and half cost maitenance on them?
That's worth 65 credits on the initial build and 13 credits in monthly upkeep. Plus whatever arbitrary value you assign to reduced construction costs (for having more engineers) and adjacency bonuses.
That is > africa bonus in month one, and providing that you consistently build workshops (at an average rate of 1/month) it continues to be better than africa bonus.

>>324077263
While I can see the merit cheaper workshops, and as a result easier access to engineers, you can just as easily get a bunch of engineers through council or abduction missions. Having access to cheaper labs is made practically negligible if you take South America, which as you said is easy enough to get the bonus otherwise. Having more funding overall opens more avenues, and you're making enough money to cover the comparatively higher production/maintenance costs.
North America is shit, because by the time you actually need to step up your air game, you'll have enough resources either through funding or the Grey Market to cover the maintenance costs, so it's far from the best. Even Asia is better, though Africa is still the best. This is the only acceptable time to say that unironically.

Africa>Asia>NA>SA>EU
SA you could swap with EU since there are only 2 SA countries and any retard can get that bonus.
>>324078014
>>324078016
It depends on how you budget it. Maitenance costs are essentially 'hidden', you pay them at the start of the month, right when you get your cash from the council and thus you don't see the alternate decisions you could be making with the money.
It would be much more apparent if maitenance costs came half way through the month and you needed to budget the however-fucking-many credits you needed for it.
Europe bonus combats largely 'invisible' costs, which isn't as appealing to some, however it is numerically equivalent to or greater than the africa bonus until relatively late in the game.
>>324078016
The europe bonus is functionally equivalent TO having more funding.
North americas bonus is seemingly less useful, aside from once again combating 'invisible' costs, however as a continent it is great to pick up because of the amount of funding it provides and the good mix of scientists and engineers. It is not a country I'd choose to start in though.
Asia's bonus is IMO, weak, though it revolves heavily around your playstyle and the amount of early investment you want to put into upgrading your soldiering roster, which is something that I feel is largely redundant on easier game modes.
>decide to try out long war
>very first mission, decided to get the second wave that gives you full squad size right off the bat
>within the first few turns, four of them die and i'm left with two squad members cowering behind cover
>somehow manage to pull it back and kill the rest of the aliums with grenades and RNG
Can't say I wasn't warned, but this was incredibly unexpected
>>324078846
Those upkeep costs really are not as much of a hassle as you would believe, I was never short on funds due to upkeep a single time in my playthroughs
It's just not a very valuable bonus if you don't spam buildings. And you don't need to in order to beat the game.
>>324079125
long war is interesting but it takes its namesake too literally and you'll soon get bored when you have to do fifty billion terror missions and UFO landings back to back with like 40-50 alien contact in each map
>>324079125
There is a second wave option that gives you all 6 right off the bat?
What else does it change?
What do you want for day 1 mods?
>6 man starting, up to 8 after upgrades
>a commander class which provides bonuses to your squaddies, or medals like EW/LW
>more advent troopers in squads, making the aliens like commanders of those squads
>splitting the 4 base classes into 8 specialized classes like LW
>fixed rookie aim
>>324079129

It's more like "Xcom is humanities most elite, tactical first responders... they're called in for things that get way out of hand or for shit that others cant respond to".
They get first stab at any of the really critical stuff, but for routine shit everyone else still has a standing army. This is actually confirmed by a lot of the council requests "Give japan 9 plasma rifles so they can fuck aliens up, in exchange they'll give you 3700 credits".

>>324085502
if i recall, isn't the base attack fairly early in the game?
>>324086165
I thought the base attack happened a few weeks after you attacked the alien base.
>>324086165
You can delay it to whenever you want. The game moves at your pace - if you didn't, or don't want to do the base assault or even build the containment facility or arc thrower, then base defense never happens.
>>324086136
i think i qualify past minimum right? im really new to steam im sorry i dont know shit
>>324086601
According to the minimum, you lack the processor for the game, but do have enough RAM. However, without access to your other parts information, we have no way to know anything else.
>>324086601
Unlikely, graphics cards on laptops are usually absolute shit unless you've got a 'gaming' laptop.
Your processor also doesn't seem to pass.

Your players are from your game and his are from his, if they die. They die in your campaign as well.
Your moves are hidden from each other. For example: You need to breach into a building, You tell your partner that for sure, you will enter the building with him. Movement, he breaches, you stay behind, he gets slaughtered by aliens and your dudes live

>>324093321
I think XCOM2 is gonna throw a curve ball and make XCOM-The Bureau canon, in that game Ethereals could basically possess people, but could get forced out through willpower.
That might be the end game, using humans as a base template to make the ultimate body for the Ethereals.

My first custom XCOM 2 soldier is going to be a former EXALT operative who joined up after the ayys turned their guns on EXALT after XCOM was wiped out. The old XCOM team was canonically too shit-tier to deal with ayys or EXALT, so I feel like it's not too crazy that the Advent went after EXALT next, but who knows, maybe EXALT joined up with the ayy administration when Earth was conquered.or maybe poor eggsalt was completely forgotten about because they aren't very important

It definitely gets easier as time goes by. The chance for critical failure in the first three months is so high. You absolutely need to have promoted survivors to edge along. Its when thin mints start appearing that it can go off the rails. Especially the DLC council missions.
Operation Portent is where a lot of people lose their A-Team. You deal with 2-3 thin men pods and they reinforce after the objective, dropping 2 at a time that automatically go into overwatch. Not easy to deal with having only a few squaddies with ballistic weapons.

I never get fucking American soldiers, but I get swamped with UK soldiers
I want to thank you all of you fellow XCOM niggas. I started with EW seriously like two days ago and today was my first terror mision. As I read your advice here, I rushed satellites coverage and armor development so I had the caparace armor on all my squads.
So anyway, I rescued the civilians and blew up the floaters and even managed to capture one, and then the Chryssalid shows up, and goes to attack one of my heavies, but the nigger didn't count on my 2 snipers set on overwatch, so they blew their nasty ass to it's third class planet. Then the other two came out and one got a hit on my soldier, but since he had caparace armor + the armor that is an item she shrugged it off. So I rekted the three Chryssalids in just one turn and prevented Nigeria from going full panic.
Thank you guys, I'd be mourning over my soldiers deads if it wasn't for you
>>324106535

No wonder you fucking lost so many without ever reactions training them.
Get them in flying armor with a laser pistol, against mutons, only allow mutons to have plasma pistols *or* give them laser pistols too. Then you wait.
The more reaction shots you take, the higher your chance of taking reaction shots (as its a comparison between your reactions and the enemies TU's). The higher your chance, the more likely you are to blast an alien in the face the second you fucking see it.
Eventually this leads to >100 reactions super soldiers with the itchiest of trigger fingers shooting motherfuckers from across the map with >100 aim.

From what I've seen of people playing it: Honestly it doesn't look so much like it's hard, but more like people are making a lot of very stupid decisions.
Started watching northernlions xcom stuff in this thread and he's a fucking comedy of errors. "I'm playing on classic difficulty, but I'm going to constantly leave my troops in low cover" "I'm going to spam grenades on my grenadier, often resulting in me disorienting enemies that I kill that same turn" "dashing all the time is a brilliant idea"
He's getting fucking hard carried by the rangers slash ability.

Assaults and supports.
Rifle assaults and Rifle supports are terrifying in firefights.

3 I believe. right near the end. He handles it well, but he made a TON of stupid decisions leading up to it.
He's often very slow to the start on most missions (from what I've seen). If he played a little bit more aggressively in certain situations he'd seemingly have a lot less problems: Ie securing more civ's before they're buttfucked in a terror site. Overwatch trapping a whole pod and annihilating it before it links up with another.

What the other guy said is true. Assaults are nasty in general; no other class can dash AND shoot twice in a single turn at low levels. Kitted and positioned properly, Assaults with Rapid Fire and Close & Personal can shoot THREE times in a turn if properly positioned. They're the biggest damage-dealers, and built around playing aggressively. Perfect for timed missions, and IMO the best all-around.
>>324112545
It has almost cost him his highest level troops close to 4 times. It *has* put all of them in the sickbay for ~30 days.
>>324112676
He did everything stupid. Putting people in half cover wasn't even his biggest problem, though he choose some piss poor half cover options.
That indoor encounter was a tougher than average setup the way he blew up all his cover, but ffs he took way more turns than necessary.

All these ufo tockens... is this the long war of board game?
Someone wanna explain how this RNG bullshit got so popular
Played EW today and had two troopers with 80% chance on a floater and nothing connected, leaving a sergeant dead with a crit
>>324113037
80% is not 100%.
I've seen dodgier RNG results in Dota 2 and Hearthstone, cases where you miss a 40% chance to hit ten times in a row, or summon the 0.0017% chance card that fucks you over completely.
RNG is not your bitch, you're THE bitch.
>>324113037
Look forward to XCOM2. Apparently, they have a fix where mid-high percentage shots won't miss twice in a row.
>>324113037
The original game was even more harsh.
>Take first step off of skyranger. Alien sniper hits soldier with heavy plasma, instantly killing them. Rookie fuckbucket panics and kills a squadmate.
>Watching your highest accuracy soldier with a missile launcher get mind controlled on the skyranger and promptly firing a missile into the rest of the squad, instantly killing all 14 people and failing the terror mission catastrophically.
From that point on you remember to bring a low will little psionic fuckslave that isn't trusted with any weapons at all just for the aliens to psionically bully.
>Starting an alien base raid, getting your squad set up in a firing line and prepped against a reaper flanked by two floaters charging at you. Only for a blaster bomb to come zooming in and take out 2/3rds of your avenger crew.
Shit legit happens all the time.
>>324113440
>They have a fix for people being retards about gamblers fallacy.
Fuck off.
>>324113037
>missed two 80% shots
Wow, it's like 80 and 100 are completely different numbers.
>>324113440
They don't. I've seen Solomon and Pete repeatedly miss high tier shots, a sniper missed several 75% shots on a single turret.
Suck it up, bitches.
>>324111250
>They abducted him
>>324113472

>It instantly destroys the interceptor

>Fail to scan the ufo searching for my base
>Second ufo encountered is an ethereal battleship, attacking my base in retalliation.
No fucking exaggeration. The second 'encounter' I had with alien aircraft was an ethereal battleship. The first 'mission' I had was a base defense versus ethereals.
I quit that game immediately.
This was stuff that was *POSSIBLE* in original xcom.
Also, way more base defenses, so layout actually mattered.
>>324113918
Its fun when it relates to what people are talking about I've also never seen anyone say old school xcom is easier
>>324114052
>very small ufo is instantly destroyed* by interceptor.
Sorry, made a mistake when typing.
>>324114062
>Its fun when it relates to what people are talking
He was talking about the original series being harder, I pointed out there are mouth breathers on this shithole that legitimately think the newer xcom games are more difficult. Hang around these threads long enough and you will see them.
>>324079276

>>324113037
It's because of the bullshit RNG system the game uses, the listed percentage, in addition to cover bonuses, perks and equipment, the seed itself influences hit percentages by tagging enemies with certain percentage thresholds whenever you take an action with a soldier, so if the seed decides that the cyberdisc with 2 hp two tiles away from your assault needs at least a 95% hit chance to be hit, and you have a 90% shot, it doesn't matter how many times you save and reload, you're always going to miss that shot.
Is Beaglerush the best Xcom streamer? He's the first streamer I've everseen that's good at the game he's showing off, which is ironic as he's a shit posting Australian
>>324115810
You can play with a new seed generated everytime you load the game. It's in the options menu when you start the game.

>"I broke line of sight, it's ok!"
>soldier gets gangfucked when enemies move two spaces and open fire
HOW? HOW DOES HE EVEN BREATHE?
>>324116528
this, it doesn't really matter much what the game tells you your to-hit is, it's already decided whether or not you hit that hypothetical shot with a percentage you never even see.
>>324116528
It is accurate, it's just all the possible dicerolls for your actions were already thrown.
>>324116528
The only thing I've ever seen on EU's hit percentages is that they do ultimately follow the expected distribution. The seed used means its determined before you actually take the shot, but functionally it's equivalent.
>>324116794
>>324116528
it is accurate, its just that the system its more like shuffling a deck of cards at the beginning rather than throwing a dice every shoot
>>324113037

Meh, maybe they'll re-intro it with the expansion.

>>324098021
EXALT was anti-alium right? They're basically trying to get alium tech and run shit?
Why didn't they just do a HYDRA? Pretend to be in the XCOM Project, and when humanity wins, merc every XCOM tool right after, and win.
Makes no sense to fight two fronts at once. That's how Nazi Germany got spitroasted.

Xcom2 looks amazing. People are saying it's amazing. It's likely to be GOTY.
Deserts of kharak honestly looks like shit. It doesn't look like it's going to recapture the things that made homeworld great, and that's unfortunate, because homeworld *WAS* great.
>>324117365
About 1/25 actually.

What makes you say that? From what I saw in the trailers, it will be a complete copy of homeworld. Only without that much of the 3rd dimention. And for me, personally, music and story is what makes homeworld, not the gameplay.

>>324122696
Obviously since Advent is present from the start they're going to be the most numerous.
>>324122696
Probably because it's early game. I mean, they are XCOM 2's sectoid equivalent. They do get some boosts that might carry them into the midgame, but that last Firaxis stream already had a pod with one powerful and two lesser aliens in it.
No exalt in XCOM2?

Because they're only 3 months in at the latest. That's how far the press release goes. What aliens do you seen in EW and EU in 3 months, anon? I only see thin men and sectoids with floaters.

Sectoid
Floater
Thin Men
Outsider
Seeker
Muton
>>324123163
Cryssalids as well.
>>324123163
Outsider is humanoid
Sectoid i'll give
Thin men make up the bulk of forces early on.
This game's going for more of an anti Advent/human-alien coalition feel to it, so of course you'd fight more of them. They're this games Sectoids and Thin Men. You see more ayy lmao's that are non humanoid later in the game, as they start getting more desperate.
>>324121975
how am i supposed to get a living specimen back then?
>>324123318
You don't.
>That feel when Xcom 2 is confirmed to fix most of your gripes with the original

>Lots of changes that just have me worried
The stealth is fantastic for giving you the option to not always engage on their terms and I love the campaign overhaul to not have you spending 70% of your starting resources on fuckin satellite coverage, but man there's a massive lack of aliens sadly and upgrades being more random drops rather than crazy research, especially to see all of meld just disappear is making me sad.
>>324119126
>looks like EXALT prefers form over function, not what I'd call a winning strategy
EXALT were idiot hipsters.

I really hope this is a fatal attack, I don't understand how you could shunt a pair of objects into somethings fucking frontal lobe without instantly killing it. Or Lobotomizing it into uselessness.
>>324123594
Meld was so good. All they needed was a little bit more reason to research more in bionics than cybernetics because mech suits ended up being so much better than just augments. It's probably part of that upcoming expansion set.
>>324122396
A little bit worried. I was hoping they'd just fill the grunt role and serve as more varied pawns on the battle field than sectoids did. I get the sad feeling the more I see though that there's only ever like 2 aliens to every 10 humans.
>>324122945
>l they needed was a little bit more reason to research more in bionics than cybernetics because mech suits ended up being so much better than just augments. It's probably part of that upcoming expansion set.
So the canon is that the ayys fucked up XCOM but XCOM fucked up exalt? Or were the ayys who fucked up exalt as well?
>>324124402
Exalt never happened because XCOM got their shit pushed in, in like the first month or two.
If anything, exalt became advent because when the ayys started looking for volunteer police, exalt type sympathizers would be the first ones to sign up.
>>324124402
The canon is apparently that EXALT never had a chance to form. I always assumed they were a pre-existing organisation taking an opportunity in EW though.
>>324123396
Theres upgrades that are from research too.
Also I'm pretty sure the number of aliens/enemies is close to or same as Enemy Unknown. I really wouldn't be surprised if upgraded variants of some of the enemies wind up showing up later as well.
>>324124005
It seems to be an instakill, yeah. The drawback is probably that it only works on ADVENT and that, unless your hack skill is very high, you have a good chance of damaging your own soldier, too.
>>324123846
>>324124005
Yes, it is a fatal attack. If it connects, it's an instant kill. It basically serves the same purpose that capturing did for EU. The thing is though, the person you are trying to hack's state has an effect on how effective you are at it. If you fail the hack, it does a bunch of feedback damage to you and also give you a really bad effect for the rest of the mission. Like "All reinforcements get two armor".
So make sure to fuck up the guy you want to hack, or you will probably fail.
