>turning your computer off at night
>>
when your computer is off, it's actually using a little tiny trickle of electricity to see if you press the power button

when your computer is hibernating, it's actually using a little tiny trickle of electricity to see if you press the power button or anything on the keyboard
>>
>>323972276
Some people don't have mommy and daddy to pay their electric bills.
>>
>>323972878
yeah but your computer isn't really using any more electricity when it's shut itself down than when you shut it down
>>
>>323972276
I used to keep mine on. Then I realised there's no fucking point in doing so. 'It'll last longer', who gives a toss. 5 years and it's outdated enough that it's time to replace the whole cunt anyway. So now I save electricity and keep my home cooler.

Besides, most people are Windowsfags which means they'd have to reboot every day to stop their piece of shit OS from slowing to a crawl.

What's the benefit to keeping it on?
>>

That's why after you turn it off you disconnect it from the wall

DISCONNECT EVERYTHING FROM THE WALL
>>
>>323972276
i do. And i also disconnect it. Wouldn't wanna wake up to my house in flames.

Opposite for me. I need at least a fan or something on when I'm trying to sleep.
>>
>>323972609
you're mixing up hibernate and sleep.
hibernate means that the contents of RAM are saved to disk and the computer turns off.
in sleep components are kept in a very low power state
>>
>>323973305
I know that feel.
>>
>I always use sleep because I don't have the patience to wait for the PC to boot up after a shut down.

I do that, but only because I live in a flood-prone shed and I don't want my power boards submersed.

Reading this thread makes me feel like I know very little about computers despite using them for many years, like most people around here. That whole thing about not turning your machine off ever, or keep a download on always whatever it might be, I don't think I understand why people do this. Is it just to save some minutes in the first case?

I have an old shitty desktop from 2007 I've been using every single day until last year that I'd turn off every night after I was done using it like you're "supposed" to do. Never had any problems with it.

I guess I'm just a very tame user.

I think I sleep with them sort of halfway open. According to my eye doctor it happens because the fan dries out my eye and then my eyelid sticks to the surface of my eye and pulls at the cornea which I guess is what causes the pain. Shit isn't fun.

>>323975520
I have a feeling that for a lot of people, at least ones here, it's because they're so used to having the hum of their computers running next to them all day that they feel like they need it at night as well.
>>
My PC boots in less than 10 seconds, why should I care about leaving it on?
>>
>>323975684
Why not?

It makes practically no difference except it takes slightly more time to boot up than just having it already on.

Unless you care about the power bill.

I spilled soup on this laptop, and if I put it to sleep it immediately wakes back up. If the keyboard drivers are installed, the shift-key is always down, but in months-gone-by it was any number of letters, and some still worked.

But here's the thing, if I turn it off, the drivers instantly reinstall, AND the first 10 minutes of the machine turning on is the mobo speaker going BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP because of the key's being pressed. I paid $70 to have it inspected and cleaned and the guy said "hey, it looked fixed when I was in there" but it still does it.

I can, however, put it into hibernate mode. And I got a free* usb keyboard from the guy, because he couldn't fix the problem or even find the problem.

*Free, of course, even though I paid $70.

What's even the advantage of keeping it on?

All I've seen was "so you don't have to wait for it to boot up." I don't care about it, as it's like 1-2 minutes and I can just grab something from the kitchen in that time as I usually do.

Is the power usage on hibernate that negligible, and if so, by how much?

I only ever leave it on out of sheer laziness.

The PC I built now 10 years ago I was using until 3 years ago when I built my current one, I passed it down to my brother and it still plays 60fps/1080pon medium quality at this point for AAA titles, other titles are 60fps/1080p/high (like Rocket League). As long as you take care of, having to swap it that often isn't necessary unless there is a huge qualitative leap like what we should see soon with GPU 14nm tech

Can of compressed air, or you can even get a little system instead of buyingthem if you clean as often as you should.

Realistically it being so poorly handled is part of the reason you would have required an upgrade sooner than normal and why people are generally under the impression that updates have to happen so often.

You're using it wrong if you think so.

I'm not even joking, compessed air is seriously wonders whether caked uplike that or just one time, although if caked up like that you might want something a little stronger like http://www.amazon.com/Metro-Vacuum-ED500-500-Watt-Electric/dp/B001J4ZOAW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1338115143&sr=8-3

I've got 760 and have no problems playing any game I want usually on high at 60fps on 1080p and I have 2 other monitors running misc apps on 1080p at same time.

>>323979475
It's really not, it's the safest way to clean that shit, and using an air compressor like the one I linked is a very cheap oalternative, it's what I would suggest in fact, but if you're not ready for that because of cost or whatever, just use the one time air cans.

I can tell you I've had mine for 5~ years now and I also let a teacher in my family borrow it to clean out their PCs at the school, as well as some family members from time to time, it hasn't shown any problems with slowing down at all.

I only clean out once every 6~ months because I leave my PC on and don't like to kill the record though.

Wow that was fucking cringe.

that said cleaning your stuff is something you should do, whether you buy throw away cans, use a vacuum or something similar (be VERY careful doing so), or purchase an air compressor like the one I linked earlier off of Amazon.

The purchase depends on you and how often you intend to use it. If you clean your PC fairly regularly, go for the air compressor. If you're going for it once but want it to be CLEAN go for the throw away compressed air can (and use it properly or it's a fucking waste), if you don't care and just want to clean some of the dust off cause you've ignored it for years, use a vacuum cleaner but be careful.

Never use a swiffer or anything else, or so help me Woden.

>My computer has fucking bright blue LEDs. Try sleeping with that shit on, faggot.

fun fact, blue light has been scientifically proven to reduce how well people and animals sleep.

I know this because one of my dorm mates back in college was a bio major who worked with mice in the uni sleep lab and was testing for that very thing [incidentally dim red lights are good to have around while you sleep], and because he had this bright blue desk clock that would shine directly at me while I slept, or tired to sleep. When I pointed this out to him pic related was his reaction. he apologized and let me put a book in front of the clock when I went to sleep [significantly later than he did]
