1 more closely follows the classic Square template -- there's more exploration/puzzles, the worlds actually tie in to the main story, the original mythos with Kingdom Hearts and the heartless and Ansem actually had potential and wasn't just a "orignl chrrctr donut steel" clusterfuck, the animations and world design were actually a mix of disney/cartoon style and anime flair, etc.
The second game is pretty much just a game. It "improves" on the first, but only by knocking out the middle making it either stupidly easy or the kind of thing only autists enjoy. Yes, the spinoffs don't actually "retcon" anything because they don't change anything that's already been established(for the most part). However, when you introduce a completely new, pervasive plot element like Nobodies or the Organization, or even the fact that Yen Sid apparently used to be a keyblade master(which is closer to an actual retcon imo), with no foreshadowing, it strains suspension of disbelief and screws with theming. Sure, it's plausible that unless the Organization started intervening directly Sora would've never encountered a nobody, and sure you could say that Yen Sid never had a reason to talk about his past, but those defenses are weak when you consider that we're talking about a fucking WORK OF FICTION. All the elements are supposed to fit together into a thematic whole -- suddenly introducing elements has less to do with "realism," or whatever-the-fuck, than it has to do with having clear symbolism and clean narrative arcs.

Alright, so as a teen I had only played 1,2,Re:CoM.
Now I went back and replayed 1,2 in the HD collection and Chain of Memories and I have a boatload of questions
1. What do I next? I can either start BBS, watch 358/2 days or ReCoded, or pirate either of those (However I heard they are both shit).
2. I am also going to work on 100%ing KH2 (I just got my endgame save, still need to grind drives/synthesis/Absent Silhouettes/whatever is hidden in Hollow Bastion).
3, Which Twilight Town was the fake one?
4. Finally,What the fuck was that room of reflection inside Castle Oblivion (or The Castle that Never Was) that Xemnas went into. They only reference it once.
I feel confused as fuck. If it werent for the post credits scene with the Letter I would swear up and down KH2 was supposed to be the end of the timeline. The only villains left are Maleficent & Pete (who seem like a non-treat if they even survived the Heartless onslaught/castles destruction) and Xehanort if he is alive.

Only BbS and DDD are necessary to have a grasp on what's going to happen in III. X is also apparently going to be a big deal, so I guess get II.8 if you want to, but I'm guessing a lot of that stuff will be revealed through III anyway, kind of like how you could almost piece together CoM when playing II.
As for gameplay, BbS added a whole bunch of cool yet horrifically overpowered abilities, so if you preferred II's combat, you likely won't like BbS.
