In practice and reality however, the aspect of cute girls, most specifically cute anime girls, being presented in a video game generally means the selling point of the video game is sexual titillation. Instead of focusing on interesting combat, game mechanics, art, story, or anything else that really pushes a game forward they instead focus on T&A or fanservice, and ultimately end up doing a diservice to the game. There's not very many difficult games that feature mainly cute girls and advertise it on their covers etc. DT2 is the only one that comes to mind, and I feel the game was made with mechanics in mind first and girls pasted over it second.But at the same time it's a dungeon crawler and those are pretty phenomenally hard to fuck up.

Games like DT2 use cute anime girls as an excuse to be mediocre. Like there is hardly any enemy variety, but they are recolored cute girls so it is "OK." The story is absolutely terrible, and even though it's a DRPG it focuses an exorbitant amount of time on it, but that's OK because there are cute anime girls.
Cute girls aren't bad, but most often it is just used to distract the player from mediocrity.

there's no real reason why the characters were designed that way or necessarily to fit the "lore", rather the lore is woven around them to justify chumming the waters to pander to the peds or Otaku
3) usually a sign of lackluster gameplay and plot

I am having lots of fun with Fortune Summoners, full of cute little girls but ass-rapingly difficult at first. The controls are tight and it takes a while to consistently pull out the moves you want, but it's satisfying as fuck when you finally do it. The enemies start braindead in comparison to the gods of death they become afterwards (some parts were full of bullshit in my opinion), rushing in and spamming attacks isn't a good idea at all in any part of the game. It does get a lot easier after your team is full, though.
