Add to this the "geeky nerd boy" fad of recent, where girls think gamers/nerds are Chad Thundercocks who wear thick rimmed glasses, skinny jeans, Chuck Taylors and Bazinga T-shirts. How else would they get to interact these "nerds" but to pretend to feign an interest in this hobby? You can draw a lot of parallels to hip hop and video games, where both "hobbies," so to speak were seen as "boys' clubs" and girls didn't want to feel left out.

Look at the first person game, a genre that had up until then been about shooting everything that moves in segmented levels, or dungeon crawling in RPGs. Thief turned it on its head. The darkness was safety, you wanted to try to avoid confrontations. Half-Life created a continuous world. Deus Ex combined shooting with stealth and RPG mechanics. Even the stories games told were evolving. In America, censorship's death grip was loosening. And then gaming got really popular and most of the advancements as a medium were lost, and now we're back to shooting everything in small levels, stories being told through cutscenes instead of the game world, like the notes in Thief or the data logs in System Shock, with feminism ruining everything.

Games got more popular, publishers got greedier than ever, so they mandate that games try to appeal to the widest possible audience, which happens to mean the removal of complexity in general. It's certainly part of the reason.
