I regards to VR specifically, I think this is accurate.
I've been in a really high quality VR when I was a teenager, but it had an hour wait line and was 25 dollars a go. It was it's own rig, but it was so expensive the dual installation vanished soon from the establishment. Probably after the initial fascination wore off enough to not outweigh the cost and wait to play it.
It was never a question of tech or execution. Such things existed it in the past. The issue is the cost relegated it as a rich kid's toy, and thus not revolutionary.

The problem with VR isn't the technology, it's the lack of decent exclusive content.
Every single VR game could easily have a competent non-VR game port.
Developers would have to be financially suicidal to develop games exclusively for VR when the install base is so small compared to everybody else. Oh sure, they're saying right now that they are VR exclusive, but that's just part of their funding agreement with Facebook - it'll be timed exclusives at best.

It's literally not too difficult to implement and can definitely catch on given actual attempts. And with the different ways VR is being presented and pursued I think it might actually catch on.
If anything augmented reality displays are going to become a thing because of it. Outside of LEL NSA google glass is actually super fucking cool and useful and microsoft and google are both trying to come out with similar products but as a full set instead of a small square in the corner.
It costs next to nothing to get VR to work in standard games (unless its PS4 and Morpheus which is a completely different ballgame) and the technology is being advanced in many forms and differing areas.
