You know this just occurred to me but walking simulators might actually be worthwhile if you can play them in VR and actually do the walking.

Like we joke around and call games like The Stanley Parable a walking simulator but think about how great a game like TSP would be in VR compared to and actual and literal walking simulator.

What's really worrying is that, especially with the HTC vive controllers, games like Amnesia with their physics puzzles will probably be ported over perfectly

itll be great for about 30 minutes, then people will start putting segways on it, because seriously, your gonna actually walk around all day to play videogames? and if its in any sort of multiplayer sense, whose going to dodge faster, the guy who has to manually walk left, of the guy who hits the W key.

>>
>>323629709

>>
>>323629474
>>323629709
Actually, human response times are significantly improved from a standing position.

Plus, I'd argue if you actually had the extremely fine-tuned control that VR could give you, you might be able to completely outclass Keyboard and Mouse users.

If we can make something like OP's pic that also allows for quick switching to a sitting position to simulate getting into a car, think of how good a game like GTA V would be.
>>
>>323629984
yes sir, tell me more about how a man can physically walk left quicker then he can press a button.
>>
>>323629474
I walk 6 miles a day for my morning exercise. Walking for videogames isn't going to bother me whatsoever.

Shit, it may help obesity in children.
>>
>>323625028
Feels bad man. I will now never be able to compete with a 30something Asian qt's virtual husband.
>>
>>323630319
But it's not just pressing a button to dodge an attack, is it?

No. It's moving left/right to dodge the attack, aiming your counter attack, and then judging your opponent's movements so that your counter attack will land.

All of that happens in AT MOST 3/4ths of a second.
>>
>>323630532
so your gonna walk 6 miles, then run and dodge and jump for a few hours when you get home. sure, exception to the rule, but the rest of the world is pretttty lazy

>>323630715
it is just pressing a button to dodge an attack. the distance between pressing the button and not pressing the button is a few millimeters at best. its the physically shortest distance, and there is no way increasing this distance could ever be faster.

try jumping. do you just instantly float up? or do you need to fight physics, crouch a bit, and launch off?
meanwhile, i hit the space bar.
>>
>>323625028

I honestly think VR is a cyclical fad, and will die out again.

I'll be excited for VR when something connects direct to my brain, like in the matrix, or surrogates.

I'm not particularly excited about strapping two cellphone screens to my head.

/v/ actually did go full retard with the VR fad, now they are saying a fucking player can actually dodge something faster than someone using a keyboard or controller, people have to remember shit like dark souls with attacks that aren't generally fast, do they seriously think they will roll like that with zero fucking training? And that is not even going into games that are faster paced or fucking multiplayer, jesus christ you niggers are always screaming about shill this and shill that but you have completely bought into the insane marketing of the VR.
Anyone have a webm or gif of that retard showing the "realtime" control of Star Wars Kinetic or that insane wagglang guido for a rockband or something like that for the wii? That is what is going to happen in the end you stupid retards. This is not even going into how sony will drop this fast when it doesn't bring the gigantic sacks of money they are betting, like the Move they tried in the past
>>
>>323631830
Dark souls is a third-person game and would not work in VR.

You wouldn't play Dark Souls/The Witcher/Civilization V in VR.

You WOULD play GTA V/Skyrim/Elite Dangerous in VR.
>>
>>323632261
How about those games then, how about Dying Light then, would you be able to dodge like in any of those games? Your best bet would be a flight game like Elite Dangerous and even then the thing you really need is a flight stick and not a retarded controller like the ones they have for VR

>>323632461
Dying Light was not designed with VR even in it's local spectrum of ideas.

Some people were able to mod it a bit and get it working, but it doesn't accept input from treadmills and other VR input devices.

Best video I could find: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3-emQXV_3E

As far as Elite dangours goes, you can get a pretty cheap HOTAS setup called the Thrustmaster X. If you want to get into the really high quality HOTAS setups, you'll want to look at the warthog.

Elite was basically designed for VR immersion from the start.

Immersion in single player games, no one gives a fuck about reaction times and multiplayer
>>
>>323625028
I wish I could have been born about three or four years later, so I'd been this age after the initial experimental phase of VR.
>>
>>323631332
IMMERSION. either the game you play has no jump whatsoever, or theres only gonna be one jump in it? come on man. what about hills. slopes, trenches, crawling over the broken husk of cars on the highway in your zombie sim 21314?

>>323633273
no, ill agree with this. VR`s future is cinematic only games. the most immersive gone home you will ever see. itll be too tiring to mirrors edge constantly, itll be too slow reaction time for gunfights or intensive combat, so on, so fourth. the order 1886, interactive cutscenes galore, here we come.

the ONLY real COMPETETIVE function i see for VR will be 1st person vehicle driving, or airplane/helicopter cockpits as a third "analog" input, looking while keeping your hands on the steering wheel and shifter or joystick

which means this is a very, very niche product.

heres how its really going to go down. literally just pairing anybody with anybody, body shape, size and everything wont matter because as far as YOUR concerned, they look like whatever you want. now all will matter is if your more into top, or bottom.

I'm about to say something that I never thought I could safely say on this website.

I used to be 300 fucking pounds. I developed Type 2 Diabetes and basically lost that weight due purely to high blood sugar not allowing me to eat for three months.

I'm now a super skinny 150lb. No muscle mass what so ever. Lifting a 20lb. weight was actually kinda sort of heavy for me. I could do it no problem, but I actually felt that feeling of "Struggle" in my arms start.

If this VR thing really takes off, I don't think I will ever sit down again.

Got a rift prototype, now saving money for a new gaming rig and oculus cv1.

Even the prototype is awesome, sure, you get sick by it after 5 minutes and it's terribly pixelated, still can't stop playing around with it. Heard they pretty much fixed both those problems in cv1 so I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm so hype, I'll even quit smoking weed for the next few months and sell some shit so I can afford it. Problem there without weed time passes even slower, I can't wait for it to be april. (or june or july or whenever this things actually hits the shelves)
>>
>>323638249
Here's the problem with that thought, though.

Video games aren't sports.

I can't tell you how much I hate football/soccer, baseball, and even tennis for fuck's sake.

But you know what sounds fun to me? I'm talking about me. A short 5' 7" 150lb diabetic that honestly hasn't lifted a damn weight in his worthless video game filled life.

Running around Los Santos with my own feet constantly looking over my shoulder for that one mother fucker that's been bounty hunting me for the past goddamn hour simply due to the fact that some fucking NPC thought stealing his car warranted paying some guy $3000 to kill me.

You know what else sounds fun?

Running through a dense forest in any of the elder scrolls games just waiting for something cool to happen. Maybe have a controller that actually allows me to hold a sword in one hand and cast spells with the other. Hell, even Skyrim would be fun again at that point. Dragon fights would actually feel epic again.

Even fucking walking simulators where I'm just enjoying myself exploring a cave sounds fun.

This is all coming from the most worthless peice of shit you may ever read words from.

If I'm willing to get off my ass in order to enjoy some VR, a metric fuck ton of other people are going to do it way more than me.

Let me put it this way.

I am going to spend at least 5 hours every day running around in some form of VR video game the very second I am able to.

First, it's going to be GTA Online. Then mayble I'll actually get on CS GO. After that, I'll load up Skyrim. Eventually, Elite Dangerous will have enough content to call me back to it.

By the time I'm bored of that, there will be tens of games available for VR.

So, I'm going to be:

>Utilizing stealth and team tactics in GTA Online
>Training my reaction time with CS GO
>Learning newtonian physics based flight in Elite Dangerous.

I'm not saying these games are going to make me any better than the world's most avrage mother fucker, but it's going to have me actually USING my body in these situations when I would otherwise be glued to my computer chair.

I'm getting off my ass and learning how to move around. I'd say that puts me above the average American.

Even if it's as expensive as the rift, with their cameras and ability to walk around in the room, the actual display quality will suck compared to the rift.

Basically what makes VR so expensive are the expensive high resolution low latency displays, there's now way around it. Oculus doesn't make any money on the rift hardware, even if it's priced at 600 bucks.

Tl;Dr: Hive is either going to be more expensive, or it's going to suck.

I've been trying to find out how the fuck this treadmill works, and I've been unable to solve it except in very contrived ways. I would like to know what this is called so that I can search for it without coming across those other shitty treadmills.

latex and noseplug, amigo. if your okay with the headset, then your okay with the rest

obviously there WILL be some requirements. theres no getting around a 300 pound hambeast not quite fitting the proportions of a 80 pound 14 year old boy

Looks like a bunch of little treadmills that rotate ^ and v, attached side-by-side so that they can all collectively rotate < and >

like imagine if this screenshot was a cross-section, and each grey square was a treadmill that could spin toward/away from the camera. That's my guess anyway

Woulda had this posted two minutes ago, fucking 'mistyped captcha' and 'connection error' my ass

I'm worried I'll be left behind.
I've only ever tried gen1 pre release OR and that shitty phone thing but both gave me nausea almost immediately. I heard the vive and the OR (final) are better, but I'm not buying until I get a chance to try.

Seriously, I could see them charging a few thousand for the complete set, headset, treadmill, controllers, games

I want home consoles to die and the age of Virtual Arcades to come to life.

I want to leave my house to feed my video game habit
I want my rival to be some shitter who shows up every friday after work and not some neckbear who doesn't sleep on my favorite server.

Did you know that the first tablet cost $3000?
>>
How much would the Oculus Rift have cost if it existed 5 years ago?
>>
>>323644049
Why do you think the years make the difference
>>
>>323643719
if you had put 4 bucks away per week since the initial announcement, youd have the money right now.

Why do you think I think that?

Are you typing on your phone?

the only thing I'm worried about with vr set ups like this, is I know my dumb ass would try to jump over a rock or something after playing for about an hour or two

dont be an ass and try to change the subject, why ask something like that if you dont think that.

Or better yet, tell us what you were thinking.

About $4000 if it used the same technology.
>>

It doesn't.

I was just wondering.

Geez.
>>

Then man up and defend your question, don't try to reflect it with dumbass comments about typing on phones man.
Come on.

Also i don't know.
>>
>>323644498
It's pretty much impossible to calculate since it would use literal future tech if it released 5 years ago.

>>

it would be worth a fuckton but useless due to the lack of computational power to run it

OR
>it's really good and you love it
>decide to play an action shooter game
>HOLY SHIT AN RPG DUCK FOR COVER
>too immersed so you actually try and jerk to a side
>rip that think metal piece of shit in half as your fat ass tries to dodge IRL
>$2000 of tech gone
>>
>>323643654
yeah duh but how does /that/ work? each blue tread has to wrap around a single panel of the silver treadmill in theory, but that means the silver treadmill operates on a track that also mobilizes many smaller tracks that control the blue treads, each one of which makes a complete unobscured loop around the silver piece by necessity just as the silver piece makea a single unobscured loop along the length of the whole machine. ow do you have that many mechanical pieces overlapping that dont fuck with one another?

Why would you punch them? If they're so distracted by the game that they don't notice you coming in, you could just take whatever you wanted and leave anyway without the victim even knowing until you're gone, drastically reducing your chances of being caught. Bonus points if you take things they wouldn't notice until way later and might think they just misplaced.

Shit hypothetical anon.

I have and It's radical, that's kinda what helped fuel my imagination.

Also, something like that, beefed up and all that jazz to be a real game, is something I'd easily throw cash at if it was in some kind of Arcade.

Too bad Arcades are fucking D E A D.

You are assuming moving left is instant on a keyboard. In the milliseconds it takes Keyboard player's brain to say 'Press A!', my brain is telling me 'Walk left!' and in the very short time it takes for the key to depress enough to be registered, I'm already moving. A millisecond advantage of key, especially in all these FPSes with microscopic TTKs. It allows more advanced movement, like turning back and shooting while running, have your pistol in one hand and a rifle in another so you don't have to sling the rifle to your back before you can pull out your pistol and shoot, or pointing your gun around a corner. Even leaning, a mechanic already in games, can be improved. Just peek hour head a tiny bit out before leaning out a very shootable chunk of body. This infuriates me in that Prison Break Heist in GTA Online; a lot of the barriers don't cover my head fully, and moving or blind shooting exposed me even more. I would agree with you in advanced movement games like Warframe though, nausea smulator 2016 if VR ever came to it.

I can't wait for the VR fad to die in the same way as motion controls and 3d did. Such a worthless gimmick.
Developers should work on making good games and decent experiences that involve the player that everyone can access rather than making games for an extremely niche market.
I hate it.

but why would you want it to die?
>>
>>323650056
All it takes is for it to be done correctly just once.

Touch controls were fucking horrendous until finally someone got it perfect. Then every phone had to have it.

Someone has to find the perfect application for it, to find its place.

Sadly i do think its going to be gimmicky for a while. its no kinect though.

2. Arcades are back.

Can you afford a phone contract?

finance is basically that. If i get one it will be dumbly through finance, its how i was able to get both my ps4 and xbox one at launch and i didn't run into any trouble with the payments. all clean within a year.

Not everyone's cup of tea through. Just a workable solution i found to these big buys. Not worth it for VR though yet, i really need to see and use it to appreciate it. till i do i'm going to treat it like 'Kinect'.

>>323653041
*says quite a few people who are level-headed about it.

VR will add nothing to video games. It's a gimmick. It's not revolutionary.

I tried it and thought it was nifty. Just that. I didn't sit there getting hype as fuck thinking about all those FPS games I could just sit through again with a monitor strapped to my head. I thought about how useful it would actually be for anything beyond interactive walking experiences, and there's not much there.

>>
>>323653534
You can argue that it won't add much to some genres, but others profit massively off it, like most simulation genres- racing, flying
