It's a great game, but people seem to praise certain chapters as the best things ever in history, when they aren't very interesting at all.
Glitz Pit is nearly always praised blindly on /v/ and any time anyone says it's alright but not mindblowing like everyone implies, you get shit on.
Glitz Pit is just alright.
Also, people who suck the dick of this game always conveniently forget the backtracking, or they act as if it is such a non issue that they have convinced themselves it doesn't exist at all.
It's still a must play for the cube.

Pretty much this.
The one thing the original has over the sequel is exploration. The overworld and star "dungeons" in Paper Mario had several maps over two axes while most of the maps in TTYD are over one axis.

Phone fucked me up
Played it again on dolphin about a year ago and it holds up. Not the deepest or most complicate RPG ever but it does what it needs to and has a bunch of Nintendo charm.

Flawed and overrated.
I feel it's only meant to played once because it's a chore to replay.
There are just way too many things that come off as obnoxious in replays.
Sometimes I just skip over it to Superand then stop because I'd rather not know what Sticker Star is like.

It's a strong sequel that improved on the original in a lot of ways.
But it's definitely flawed. A lot of chapters really show how tedious they are on a second play though. Escorting punis, glitz pit having a ton of slow mandatory fights to grind through, twilight town to creepy steeple backtrack extravaganza, the train chapter loses it's power when you know what happens and the train chapter's boss just shows up out of literally no where.
Also, just about every new feature added ttyd added made the game even easier than pm64. Partners having health means more HP bars to hide behind, no level or per stat cap means you can buy into nothing but BP and be insanely strong stupidly early, superguarding makes rhe game a joke, and stylish moves nets you with more star power than you'd ever need.
Paper Mario N64 is better but TTYD is a good game nonetheless.
Flawed and overrated.
TTYD has too many garbage chapters that that rear their ugly heads on a first playthrough like 2, 4, and 6 and ones that rear their ugly heads on replays, like 3, 5, and 7. The pacing is completely awful, the game copies too much from the first game, and the paper gimmicks add nothing of value to the game.
Its fun, but replaying it and you get to that weird part where its all black and white with the lady with the big tits just isnt fun. Or the part where you have to find the captain bob-omb or whatever
It's good, but half of the game feels like "Oh now i'm getting to THAT part...ugh"
Everything around it, the dialogue, music, combat, side shit, all of that is impeccable, but holy fuck does it feel like some chapters drag. If Intelligent Systems had done one more iteration on this formula and worked out the pacing, they might have made the best Nintendo game of all time.

pm64 is better
I love the game despite the fact that shitting on it seems to be the new and popular trend. I personally like it more than PM64 (although I love both don't get me wrong).
They should really release it (and GC games in general) on VC so more people can play it.

Way to much backtracking. Otherwise great game.
One of my favorite games. It has its flaws. The endless backtracking and the replays can get rough because you already know everything and some levels get tedious. I still live the first level. I'll replay it in a year or two. It'll be my 8th time probably.
A lot of people don't even know it exists, it's only overrated in places like /v/. I liked it a lot, and it's probably my favourite Nintendo-console title, at least. I'd never call it "the greatest game of all time" but it's a favourite
