Mario 64 is not that good.The Nintendo 64 in general is overrated largely due to nostalgia. There is no denying it's contribution to gaming and the foundation it set for the possibilities of 3D gaming, but like many first attempts it was not that great by itself. The had a vastly superior library.

The N64 had gems, no doubt about it. But the cost of being innovative meant it had just as many stinkers. How many previously 2D franchises made got 3D sequels on the N64 that were total shit?
Castlevania, Metroid, Megaman, etc.
The N64's problem was that 3D was so new and cool that everything had to be 3D and we had to try and make everything 3D, even if it didn't work. Because we didn't really know what worked.
Some things translated well, Mario 64 was a very well made game even if I don't really enjoy it. Ocarina of Time was great, even if I prefer 2D Zelda. Star Fox and Mario Kart were basically meant to be 3D games.

Except Metroid never got a N64 game because Metroid 64 was so bad that they couldn't figure out how to make it fun. They later made Prime on the GC which was great, yeah, but Metroid skipped an entire console generation because early of the early 3D boom.
The PS1 will always be superior to the N64 to me, simply because games that needed to be 2D on the PS1 were 2D.
Imagine if we had a 2D Super Metroid sequel that used the N64's 3D capabilities like Symphony of the Night did with the PS1.

As somebody who grew up on PC, I personally didn't enjoy this game. But I still understand why console gamers love it.
PC shooters were lightyears ahead of Goldeneye in terms of technology and controls, but Goldeneye was definitely a milestone for console gaming and I respect it for that.
