I'm a console babby building my first PC. PC is exclusively for gaming as I have a fairly decent laptop for everything else one might need a computer.
Which OS should I go with and is there any big risks to pirating Windows? I do plan to play online and mod the shit out of games and run games from steam and non steam games.
I was thinking 8.1 because of how easy it is to pirate a copy that thinks it's legit but I'm sure someones going to tell me how stupid that is.

Some old games don't work on win10. For instance SH2 emulated and Toy Story 2 don't work for me. I don't see any gaming reason to touch win10 until dx12 becomes a thing

Including but not limited to, anything that uses SecuROM or StarForce.
For some you can just do the install on another computer, copy the files over and apply a crack.

I have throwaway laptop that I booted 8.1 onto and it worked fine. Though the laptop no longer works with the battery in i need to plug it in and take out the battery but I think that has something to do with making a balls of taking the previous OS off it. The fewer people who 'upgrade' to 10, the less pressure developers will face to be locked in to DX12. If you stay on Windows 7 you will help adoption of the Vulkan standard which will ultimately make switching off of Windows easier.
We can no longer allow a console company to hold back the PC as a platform. Getting access to your GPU's features should not require a forced upgrade to a platform that removes your control over your own system.
