As a unit in Fates, the more specialized you are the better.

It's pretty good, the whole gameplay though is like chess, you have units across a rectangular grid each with assets and weaknesses you've got to play around with.

I'm not sure what you mean by "deep" but it can be difficult at times, especially when one wrong move can cost you a unit (which won't come back.) Gameplay is certainly balanced, you won't ever be extremely overpowered (unless you grind in certain games) and you wont be left underpowered, unless you're playing on hard difficulties.
