It doesn't really do anything super innovative, but its gameplay is just really good, pretty much just a mash of retro platformer tropes sewn together well.
As for aesthetics, I like them, they're "LOL retro" but they took the time to make them pleasant-looking, instead of just using "LOL retro" as an excuse to be lazy with the graphics.
It's a game for people who like retro platformers, and if you don't like those I can see why you don't like this. I fucking love them so the game was great for me.
The 3ds and wiiu controllers use a very low-power nfc ping.
You can do a high-power ping with your phone and read it through the box and a foot of lead.
Then just have your phone code the signal to the wiiu or 3ds when it's pinged.

Not to mention, Shovel Knight also played by many of the same rules for retro games as far as graphical presentation. Obviously, they chose not to follow some of them, like the color pallet limits, but they do have a whole page somewhere detailing what they did and did not follow and why. It shows that they were really putting thought into their retro aesthetic and not just saying LOLOLOL 8 BIT AMIRITE

Shovel Knight is an okay game that is quite fun but lacks innovation, and depend on who you're asking, has underwhelming level design and lacks its own identity. however, it seems that the whole Internet has been paid by Yacht Club Games to promote the game and act as if it's the best game ever made. no one seems to even acknowledge that there are areas where the game fall short to other gamers. also people like to act like this game, which heavily borrows ideas from classics, is worth more than it really is, and that it is somehow the saviour of modern gaming. they also like to act like anyone who doesn't like the game is either unreasonable or stupid. nostalgia can be a scary thing.

that's exactly my thoughts. but then you have more well-known and influential figures in the gaming community like ProJared praising the game to no end and act like it's perfect.
just go on Youtube and look for the game's reviews. the only two reviewers who has any sort of criticism for the game i've found is TheRetroReplay and gillythekid (who was featured in Somecallmejohnny's video review, which was the only thing that makes that video feels more like a review to me, even though i usually agree with Johnny. that guy has his own subjective review of the game and that's another more critical review of it).

More like its supposed to be celebrating nostalgia as you remember it. It applies nostalgia fueled items to itself in very specific amounts so it feels like an old game, but it adds tons of modern sensisibilities that take away the clunkiness that your mind wants to forget from those rose tinted times.
As it also happens, the game is fucking awesome too as a side-effect.
