Well, of course. TIE Fighter has one of the best campaigns I've ever seen in comparable combat-oriented (whether space sim or otherwise) video games.
Letting you choose which battles to work on didn't let you get terribly stuck - you could always come back to them. The stories were subtle (no superweapons - just lots of pirates, rebels, and traitors), and it felt cool to unlock ships (like the TIE Advanced and Defender) as you helped facilitate their production.

I know. In TIE Fighter, you were pretty much just an average joe pilot who became a slightly less average joe pilot. It exemplified the mundane, and then made it interesting. It made you like the Empire - not out of lofty ideals - but because it was your joband the ships were cool. I can't think of many other games that are like this - like you said, most games feel the need to put the player in some godlike role, fighting with lightsabers and dealing with superweapons.

I liked flying the Bomber, simply because it truly had that niche bomber feel.
Felt cool to fly in and take down a capital ship with rockets. Now, I know that you could do that in later, better ships (and the Assault Gunboat), but still, there was something fun about going in with that small, but slow Bomber.
