It really is baffling how horror video games always fall apart at the end.
When it's any other medium a horror story will end with a cliffhanger or bad end or something interesting or unorthodox but it seems like every horror video game just ends with a shoehorned "EPIK BOSS FITE!" and then the clouds part and it rains puppies and happiness from the sky.

>Prisoners, including one known POW,[18] were subjected to vivisection without anesthesia.[19] Vivisections were performed on prisoners after infecting them with various diseases. Researchers performed invasive surgery on prisoners, removing organs to study the effects of disease on the human body. These were conducted while the patients were alive because it was feared that the decomposition process would affect the results.[20] The infected and vivisected prisoners included men, women, children, and infants, including pregnant women impregnated by Japanese surgeons and their infants. Prisoners had limbs amputated in order to study blood loss. Those limbs that were removed were sometimes re-attached to the opposite sides of the body. Some prisoners' limbs were frozen and amputated, while others had limbs frozen, then thawed to study the effects of the resultant untreated gangrene and rotting. Some prisoners had their stomachs surgically removed and the esophagus reattached to the intestines.

In the wiki article it mentions a handful of books but it seems they're all in Japanese. In the "Abroad" section of "After World War II," it lists a single book and a few films on the subject.
Just because reading on a screen strains your eyes doesn't mean you couldn't have looked for this yourself.

This actually happened.
This isn't some hokey passing down of events with exaggeration, these things actually happened to human beings on the planet earth, at the hands of other human beings of the planet earth.
There are human beings who were subject to these things and had to live their last moments in absolute agony even Pinhead would reel back from. Some of those humans had not been alive for more than a day. Pain was all they knew. This has transpired, and it transpired long ago for reasons lost on the children of tomorrow.
Jesus Christ, how horrifying.

>>323270923
You can do it right if the bosses are legitimately more terrifying than the regular game experience, though. Like silent hill, you really gonna tell me dropping into a black void just to land on a floating island of grating, and you're stuck with some horrible slimy dick lizard thing doesnt sound horror as fuck?
>>323270704
>final boss is just a regular enemy because boss fights are an archaic scenario

>As above, under the American occupation the members of Unit 731 and other experimental units were allowed to go free. One graduate of Unit 1644, Masami Kitaoka, continued to do experiments on unwilling Japanese subjects from 1947 to 1956 while working for Japan's National Institute of Health Sciences. He infected prisoners with rickettsia and mental health patients with typhus.
> In 1952, human experiments carried out in Nagoya City Pediatric Hospital, which resulted in one death, were publicly tied to former members of Unit 731.[55] Later in that decade, journalists suspected that the murders attributed by the government to Sadamichi Hirasawa were actually carried out by members of Unit 731.
And they continued to happen. The future refused to change.
>>323271080
The SH games are legitimately terrifying and by far the best pure horror in a video game. Silent Hill is on par with the best literature and film when it comes to creating an atmosphere of pure dread and horror.

>>323271026
nah, what you need to do is basically have all the enemies be regular people who have been crippled beyond repair. Just have the regular grunt just be some poor fuck that got kidnapped and had surgery done on him to turn him into a monster, and every waking moment for him is pure agony, and you do them a service by killing them, and damn them to eternal suffering if you forget to kill them. Then the final boss is some dr mengele motherfucker who's basically gone full cenobite and has done irreparable surgery on himself to turn into an abomination.
Body Horror is best horror, and even the suggestion of it is enough to be genuinely menacing. I mean, fucking look at this:

Remove the store (like, the store kiosks that let you buy ammo and health and upgrades), and I feel the game is fixed. Any game with a store cannot be a horror game, for this purpose, the merchant from re4 is a store.
You must have played dead space on easy, because on hard the drops from enemies suck ass, so you cant just easte ammo missing shots, and you can be killed really quick by a single necromorph.
