This game is a lot trickery than I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong I didn't expect a cake walk, but I didn't expect quite this much of a challenge.
It's not that tough. Deaths don't really matter since you most likely saved 10 feet away from where you died.
What's tough is getting the Immortal achievement (zero death run)
I think I was at 190 when I finished the game. Given how little consequence death has, I actually would have liked it to be a bit harder.

The game is pretty hard but pretty much encourages you to save scum. Just do that and you've won half the battle

There are two or three areas which you won't be able to return to after certain events. So keep multiple save files if you're going for a 100% run on your first try and want to make sure that you won't miss anything.

I died quite a number of times, but the game is not getting more challenging because of it, since 95% of the death don't actually punish you in any way, other than setting you back a few seconds. Arguably the hardest part of the game is the last run, since you're expected to perform for more than a minute.
