It's the npc party system, each player creates their own pawn who they adventure with and can recruit up to two extra pawns made by other players. If you pirate it you'll have to deal with randomized pawns who always have shit skills, gear, vocations and AI. Not to mention since you can't rent out your own pawn you'll be rifit crystal starved as fuck and you need RC to get late game gear.

you've never played the game before? basically you make two characters, one you'll play and one to follow you around. you can teach it shit and make it play in a way that you want. when you sleep, it uploads to a server where other people can play with it. you can use up to two of other peoples's custom made pawns. they can either hinder your game or give you amazing teamwork.
