Not the filming/editing equipment. For instance, his main camera just broke last month, so he needs a new one. Plus he has to pay for the studio space. Unlike the majority Youtube people, he's actually trying to do a professional job with his videos. He puts hours of work into every single video. That costs money.
And he's trying to make a living at this. If he were just trying to do it as a hobby (as he said he was going to do back in November), he wouldn't need to ask for money. But people literally begged him to start a Patreon so he could keep the show going on a regular basis.

I'm glad museums don't work this way. They're pubic funded and rely on donations too.
