Okay, for the record, I'd be just as happy with a cute boy simulator. It'd probably be even less popular than the other one, but I'd still enjoy it.
I just want to play a game that gives me the freedom to create a new life and live it out. I'm tired of being forced into some predetermined role, such as a knight, a soldier, a bounty hunter, a champion, a supernatural being, etc. For once, it'd be fun to decide my starting point with almost no limits. What if, instead of having to choose between classes of heroes, you were allowed to pick something as mundane as a pedestrian in a town who just wants to travel? If you went out unprepared and got fucked up by bandits or monsters, oh well. Load the last save/make a new file and start over! Give me the freedom to have almost any kind of life, and as many different lives as possible. That's the kind of simulator I want. Cuteness would just be a huge bonus.

The problem is you have to design the game to make anything the players does at least interesting, if not viable, and if the player has complete choice, then a lot of players will want to do the combat route, which means you'll have to put effort and focus into it and before you know it you've basically made Seyda Neen, where it's like, yeah you can walk around here forever like fargoth, but you'll probably get bored and run out and start playing the game with combat and stuff.
The problem is it's really really hard to make a game with combat, but not need the player to ever encounter it.
Fantasy Life tried to sel itself as a game where you can just not be a fighter and instead play the game as a cook or tailor or something, much like you can in many MMO, but the problem is that the combat still is there and you are still going to do it, it's just too useful to be able to get your own materials and explore the world yourself.
