Why the fuck would you play gnomes or similar races?
I play small races mostly because they take up so little of the screen while still being in third person perspective, so I don't have any of my vision blocked. I also feel like I'm running faster.
I also find most of them cute.

Killing people with a gnome character in WoW used to drive people nuts, like killed by a human was ok, but a gnome killing those "FOR THE HORDE" dudes always made them lose their shit. I guess it was fun for a while. Also, some people don't feel the need to self-insert.

If it's a vanilla private server then you have a extra stealth level for nothing and the highest base agility in the game, stealth has a cool-down and then shadowmeld's utility is GODLIKE. Feign death in PVE, escape from fights in PVP.

There's no fucking epic Goblin Hero, and unfortunately even in cases like Re:Monster they usually tend to 'grow' into Orcs somehow or other.

I'm on vanilla WoW. Shadowmeld is not usable in combat just like stealth, and with 5/5 camouflage, stealth is on a 5 sec cd, so stealth can be used instead of shadowmeld upon using improved gouge.

Typically in good MMOs they have benefits larger races do not.
In DAoC Lurikeens (leprechauns) had incredibly high Dexterity (dodging, blocking, casting speed, parrying, half bow/dagger damage) and Quickness (attack speed) to make up for their terrible Strength and Constitution. Made excellent casters, stealthers and shield based tanks.
Also people get really mad for no reason at small races, so that's great too.
I dunno, I just tend to play small races. In tabletop I tend to play comic relief types, and races like gnomes or halflings fit that bill well.
