No, the controls are totally fine for the most part. If you're not brain dead you can just move your thumb off of the attack button for a second to rotate the camera or just mash L to use Auto-Lock. The camera is only really required with bowguns and larger guys like dalamadur and gogmazios.

It's just monster hunter autists being bad. I've played freedom unite without the claw. You just use the L button to reposition the camera infront of you and learn how to control your character properly. I've played 3U without lockon on the 3DS (only used lock on underwater). Same with 4U, but that that point I had the new 3ds so I could use the nipple for camera control. I've been in Grank in all the games and farmed the hardest monsters while using all of the weapons. Claw autists are just that, autists.
